Parrots
5 Parrots, 8 year old Blue-fronted Amazon, 2 1/2 yr. old African Grey, 2 3/4 year old Senegal. 5 month old ekkie, 5 month old Albino parakeet. Major Mitchell Cockatoo, passed away at age 68.
Here's a Capped Amazon (I Think) that was brought in. I haven't seen many of these come in. Only Second one brought in in 7 years.

They have lovely nature to them. Least this one dose.

This is "Bruce"

Nope. That's a cape parrot.

Smallish amazon sized bird. Large macaw beak.

Kind of a mellow Sennie personality, some 'tude, not as much 'tude.

I've only played with one. Very sweet bird.

Weren't that many imported into the US.

He's about 4 years old, very sweet guy, they are quite playful.
I'm almost tempted to bring it home, but wife says I have too many to take care of right now.

My Raven was raised playing with Cape Parrots :). They're a species his breeder specializes in.

They're cute birds. When I've seen them at the stores, they are so pretty in person. Many more subtle colors than pics can capture.

I've never seen a Cape Parrot. That's a beautiful bird, at first glance the beak looks out of proportion for a bird that size. I love the coloring around the neck.

Hawk, please let us know if your wife changes her mind.

I agree Julie, this Cape was just awesome natured. I took him out ( which by the way the person that surrendered him named it Bruce) and played with it. I was drawn to the different characteristics of this bird, as I never seen one of these in person.

it rolls backwards and puts it's head on your chest and looks up at you. My wife says " he wants you to take him home.." which My eyes lit up....and my wife is like...ohhh, uh, no we have plenty right now.......awwwwwwwwwwww. Are they really that rare??

Someone told me at the rescue/store that they were, and I read the link Wendy provided which had some great info, and thought wow, they must be rare.
Only 2 known in Michigan I was told, and that was one of them.
Seems like there would be more breeders out there, not that we need more as there are plenty of birds needing homes.

Allee, it's interesting how large the beak is in relation to the body size. All Poicephalus have a large beak, but Capes are exaggerated. I've heard they're generally not as inclined as other Pois to be quick to use it thank goodness.

I'm lucky in that because of where I live, I have been able to see more parrot species than most people, including rare ones. I've wanted a Cape for a while, being the Poi lover that I am, but no more birds for the forseen future!

Hawk, there are so many people interested in them nowdays that they have become a little more plentiful. Still fairly rare, but I believe one day they won't be because of their popularity. They're beautiful, exotic looking, and larger than the other Pois. They are high priced because of the high demand out there. My Ruppell's parrot also a Poi, is a rarer bird than the Cape, yet is not an expensive one because they're not popular.

Michael, your wife must submit to MBS immediately and openly embrace your adoption of Bruce!

Distinctive and nice looking bird - if they are fairly mellow he won't be any trouble at all! :D

There is one right now - a young one - at the store I go to on a regular basis. It is a different looking fellow but it leaves an impression on you. The one at the store has an orange top/front.

"It's a different looking fellow" lol, gave me a little giggle. Orange forehead means juvenile or female.

They just look different. I did a double take when he/she first got to the store.

Rescuing the Endangered Cape Parrot - YouTube

Check this out in regards to the cape parrot.

This is the "real" Cape Parrot in the video. This one is not found in captivity (except for conservation) and not as pets.

The ones we usually see (as in the OP's pic) is a very similar Poicephalus, the Brown Necked parrot, and there is a subspecies called the Gray Headed parrot. These two are the ones found in the pet trade. The one in this thread's pic is the Brown Necked which is the one usually seen where I live. Confusingly, they are ALSO called Cape Parrots.

On the first page here, Wendy includes links. The first link explains the confusion with names and the taxonomic classifications of the species. :)

There is a seven year old male Brown Neck (aka Un-Cape) Parrot looking for a home on the Seattle Craigslist. If only I could take in another bird...

I sure wish I could talk my wife into it Allee. This Little guy is adorable, and really really good natured. Funny too, I thought the beak was a bit too big for this bird, But hey It makes him special right?:D
