Others on here have said that you could help me identify what type of amazon Jackie is; I recently rescued 2 parrots and the owner has Alzheimer's and couldn't tell me anything about them. I think Jackie is a Mexican red head, but I'm not sure... ImageUploadedByTapatalk1362271091.495975.jpg

(I know flash is probably not recommended for taking pictures of birds, but it was the only way Jackie's colors would show...)

Hey, jackie appears to be a Green Check Amazon or also called Mexican Red Headed.

Ok, thanks! Do you know if there's a way to tell male vs female with green cheeks?

To the best of my knowledge ,no. I'm sure there's a breeder somewhere who can. I haven't been around them much. Seems to be more of a West Coast,SW USA bird. Not as common here in the SE.

She's a Tucuman.

She's missing the blue 'streak' that Green Cheeks/Mexican Red Heads have, and she has black edged feathers - a trait of the Tucuman amazons.

They aren't very common within captivity, and I have seen someone trying to sell a pure Tucuman as a hybrid. Just goes to show how uncommon they are.

Here are photos for comparison. Other Tucumans.

There you go,, learn something new every day.

Henpecked- thank you!

Welcome. :)

I know how confusing the different amazon species and subspecies can be! Not to mention hybrids...
