Yesterday I purchased some unfinished wood beads from the craft store to use in some bird toys, and I emailed the company to find out what kind of wood they're made from and got a response that they're made with hemu wood from the guger tree.

I haven't been able to find out much info on whether this wood is acceptable to use with birds, so I'm hoping someone can help me :D

It's an Asian evergreen wood that is clean grained & used for a lot of children's toys marketed here in the U.S. and given the dangers of things coming out of China in recent years, I'm pretty sure toys for children would get closer scrutiny than anything for pets, but like you found, there's virtually nothing regarding birds, but here are some links you can do further research from:

Good luck.....

Thanks Walt!

I did talk to a rep from the company prior to emailing them, and she said they do have a lot of people wanting to know if the beads are safe for babies to chew/suck on (in necklace form), which apparently they are....

Based on the info from the first link you gave me, it seems the only issue is with the bark.

My thoughts so far are that the beads would be safe....but I would really like to find out for sure [emoji51]
