Title says it all :) weā€™re on two acres of land, and when working in a neglected part of the yard I found 4 random rose bushes and this unknown shrub. Clearly a prior owner at some point tried to do something in this area.

Hereā€™s the grass. Iā€™m praying itā€™s not a weed, but rather an ornamental of some sort. Same general area as I found the roses. The leaves are stiff and roughly circular (not flat blades).

They both look like actual plants (not weeds). I have seen that bush in my parents' yard (at one point or another...maybe boxwood...but I don't think so...) The grass looks like maiden grass or chives....can't see it well enough.

Yeah thatā€™s why I dug them up and replanted them in places closer to the house. I just wish I could figure them out. The shrub could possibly be a barberry if some sort but Iā€™m not 100% certain.

Hanging my head in shame. - I was a horticulturist for 10 years...my degree is plant sciences. Money and time well spent, apparently!

Could the shrub be a bayberry? Any barberry varieties that Iā€™ve come into contact with have been a prickly affair and that one doesnā€™t look very thorny - although there could be less prickly versions (I donā€™t plant anything that fights back when I prune it lol).
