Indian Ringneck
Hello, everyone.
I've recently brought home an Indian Ringneck, whose only six months old, so I dont know the gender yet.
My IRN isnt hand tamed, and I've been searching on the web for ways to tame him. I know I need to gain his trust first, but how can I do that? Ive been bringing him his water and food, and cleaning out his cage. I've also been bringing him treats and fruits, but he still doesnt seem to like me. Every time I come close to his cage, he stops and stares at me, and whenever I get really close, his pupils dilate and he makes a growling noise. But when I offer him food, he does take it from my hand, and he doesnt back away from me. Just stares. And if I put my hand close, he always tries to bite it.
Advice?
Thanks :D

Give him a bit of time.. just talk to him and keep offering him treats as you are already doing.

You could also try to get him to step onto a stick for now, if he will not step up without biting.

You could also try clicker training.. If you go onto Youtube there are video;s that show you exactly how to do this.

Hi,
I have had ring necks for years, just got a new blue on Saturday, it's young, I'd say 4-8 months ish. Parent reared in an aviary, not tame. In less than a week I have my baby coming down the cage, stepping up onto my finger and eating out of my hand. The way I do this is to remove good from the cage, a full content wild bird is less likely to want to interact, however offering food to a hungry bird, reinforces to the bird that coming down to your hand to eat is positive. It will associate you with good things, it will build a good trust bond with you because you won't have to chase it around the cage. Slowly build the trust and introduce petting in time, dont rush !
