Help with choosing suitable cage

Hello,
I am soon to be adopting a couple of Sun Conures, I have never kept birds of this size before. Both are tame and fine to spend plenty of time out of their cage, But I still want to make sure they have a decent sized, suitable cage, for any time they do have to spend shut in.
I currently have my eye on 2 cages, one slightly smaller than the other.
Would love to know peoples thoughts, or recomendations if they have used either of these themselves.

Sorry for me, both look a bit small! Take a look into flight cages! A bit lighter in construction, but much more size for the $$$!

Haven't used either one, but I would recommend getting the larger one, at least.


Conures can easily live for 20-30 years, possibly even 40+ years (some species already have!), so if you take this into consideration, it's best to get the biggest/best cage possible that they may live in for the rest of their lives.



BTW, I am *not* a fan of open top cages (too many death stories), so would recommend making sure that either the top has a locking mechanism *or* you chain/lock it close so there is no way it can be opened from the inside. Also take into consideration that some parrots are smart enough to unlock their own cages from inside the cage!


I know of one particular blue throated macaw that has to have a chain and quick link, at minimum (she has even had a pad lock with key set!), to keep her inside her cage! And her cage has two locks (original cage lock and an added lock of a different style) and a piece of metal that hangs down to keep the door from swinging open even with the locks open... and she knows how to open all of them!

This is the one I got for my one sun conure. I would consider both of the ones you're looking at too small, even if they spend most of their time out of it. At $140 US the one I got was a good deal, it has very strong bars of appropriate spacing, and nice latches/feeding doors. I am very happy with it. Plus it's on wheels which is handy if you want to move it!

Why do you have a problem with this cage? I own it and it is very secure, very strong, easy to clean, very roomy, and does not have the problems that flight cages do such as flimsy feed door locks (I had a flight cage for my Quaker and the feed doors had to be help closed with clips!). The ones that they are looking at are half the size of the one I linked in both height and width and have an open top, which I've found to be somewhat risky when trying to keep your birds inside, whereas this one has a playtop, a very helpful feature. Also, the same cage is available in the UK. I respect your opinion, but I think it would be helpful if you shared why you think the cages they are looking at are better than the one I offered as an option.

That is a really nice looking cage, but it looks like the bar spacing is over 3 cm, which is over an inch I believe. Your suns might be able to get their heads stuck in between the bars with that spacing. Between 5/8 and 3/4 inch is best for conures.

I have flight cages. Mine don't have food doors. I've kept large conures (larger than suns) in them without issues. I prefer wider over tall cages.

Playtop Cage
24 x 22 x 37.5



Based on those dimensions, the Santa Fe is larger than the Playtop which is larger than the Mini Santa Fe. I, personally, wouldn't put two conures in the Playtop cage...



The Santos Dome Top does have too big of bar spacing.

I highly recommend HQ brand cages. Very roomy, sturdy, the powdercoating is thick and easy to clean and does not chip easy. They are very affordable as well. I have also read about the quality control testing they do to test for contaminates. Amazon or Drs Foster and Smith are great sites to order them from.

Just a note - with any cage it should be inspected thoroughly for any sharp edges that need light sanding. This is a normal part of the manufacturing process, especially for powdercoated ones, but they can cause cuts/infections for birds if they get scratched so it's always good to check
