We have gone on vacation and have lost power at home. There is a winter storm at our house and our house lost power. My sister is watching our house and birds and says that the power is out. How cold can our birds handle?? The temperature in our house was 71 degrees last night and the power has been out for 2.5 hours. I know the ideal temperatures for birds, but what is the coldest they can withstand?? My sister can't get in the house, without breaking in, because we only gave her a garage door opener. Please help!!!

Sorry I don't reli know but hopefully this will bump it up so someone will see! Also I'm abit confused So is the bird in the garage then? Because that will get cold much quicker than the house?

I don't understand either, how is she taking care of the birds if she can't get into the house?

Don't worry excessively.

It's not going to kill them unless it gets well below freezing for an extended period of time. (days and longer.)

Overheating is a bigger danger than cold, actually. They are, after all, wearing natural down jackets remember.

No, I'm sorry, they are not in the garage. They are in the house, but the garage is attached and she's been using the garage door opener to get into the house, through the garage.

Has your sister called the power company to see how long the outage is expected? They can usually give you a ballpark figure.

Not knowing how well your home is insulated, your fids should be fine for quite a while, especially since nobody is opening and closing the front door to let the cold air in. So the inside temps shouldn't drop drastically or quickly.

Since we have given her the garage door opener and the power is out, the garage door opener isn't working...it runs on electricity.

I've been trying to call the power company and their number is constantly busy. I'm going to continue to try and get ahold of them. Our home is very well insulated, so I'm hoping that is good enough.

Thank you.

Don't freak out too much. Parrots are pretty hardy and can withstand short periods of time in colder temperatures. They also won't starve either if they go a few hours without food. It's not ideal and they might be frightened and/or unhappy, but they'll make it. However, if tomorrow rolls around and theres still no power, it's time to get a locksmith in or have the sister break in or go have a duplicate house key made right now and fedex her the key overnight so she will get it tomorrow and be able to get in the house.
