about 6 months ago i got bulk food from a local pet store, about 2 months later i had found moths in the bin, so i froze what was in it, and threw it away after freezing it. (i only bought about 2lbs). one of the moths had gotten out and slowly i keeps seeing more and more, i have cleaned out the room many many times. and I STILL cant seem to get rid of them. at first it didnt bother me a couple moths here and there, but now i have lots of them, and their pre moth form worms too, and they crawl around the ceiling and its awful. Now again this wouldnt be so bad, vacuuming every day, but the place they are in is the worst place possible, my bedroom. How can I get rid of them without harming the birds:confused:

Look on the bright side Mariah, your birds, like mine, may enjoy some fresh meat, especially Ollie.....those larvae are all protein.....

All kidding aside, some birds do enjoy helping make short work of those pests and they are good for our feathered friends.....

There are a couple of earlier threads, on the forums, concerning your problem...here's one:

http://www.parrotforums.com/general-health-care/34786-pantry-moths-around-my-birds.html

Part of the recurring problem is you.....you're not looking in all the right places & you may be letting them crawl back in. These types of moths are grain feeders & will feed on anything grain based, dry cereals, flours, meals, breads, etc. Carefully check any packages of dry cereals, flours, meals, breads, etc., pantries, cupboards, closets...even dry dog food, cat food, rabbit pellets, hamster food or even monkey food.....they can and will chew through cardboard boxes and the thin plastic envelopes inside, however, sealed hard plastic containers, like Tupperware usually keeps them out, as does freezing and only taking out what you will use during a week's time.....

When in their larval stage, they do, as you've already discovered, climb walls to spin their cocoons...at ceiling joints.....be sure to look carefully in closets too. While they won't bother your clothes, unless you have a grass skirt or two, I have found them under folded cuffs and collars of clothes as well as in the ceiling corners of closets.....

When you vacuum them up, if you don't immediately throw away your bag or empty your canister OUTDOORS, they'll find their way back for feeding & nesting.....for bagless canister vacuums, I was inclined to spray the inside of the canister with a moth spray, just to be sure any missed eggs were taken care of.....

Too bad you didn't ask your question last Friday, you could have done all this "spring cleaning" over the weekend and been already done with it.....

Good luck.....

Oh, did I mention that you need to plan on doing this again, probably the next 3 or 4 weekends.....you have to break the hatching cycle & like the old Lay's commercial, one is not enough.....

Now you can go have good luck ! ! !

I had them a few months ago I bought several pantry moth traps ...it is a sticky glue board with a pheromone on it and I also continued to vacuum every one I could find it took about a week or so to get them under control and now they are gone completely...you can get the traps at most pet stores or bird fairs and I also found them at the co-op store or a feed store

I have never had moths. I freeze everything. I pull out food for the day and leave the rest in the freezer.

Fly swatters help a LOT if you have an infestation. So do pantry moth traps. BUT, the swatters and the traps will ONLY help you watch TV somewhat more peacefully - THAT I learned the hard way. :54:

Mine (yes, I have a continuous, ongoing battle at the moment) like to deposit their offspring along corners, rough corners, and popcorn ceilings.

I have given up on trying to eliminate them completely, simply because I don't seem to be winning - YET - even though the vacuum cleaner IS my best friend.

im having my mom pick up some traps tonight, and tomorrow once i have them i will be cleaning out everything, in the room hopefully that helps, i have found the nests, theirs probably 5 or 6 at the moment, so hopefully getting rid of them will be a bit easier that i know where they are. but hopefully i can get this taken care of, waking up with the babies crawling around on the ceiling hoping none of them fall onto the bed.
