Help Mixing Conures

Hey folks, I've been enjoying reading these forums, and am hoping for a bit of advice.

I had a sun conure for 15years or so (Park), and got him a buddy, andother sun (Pita) about 2 years ago. They got along great. 6months ago Park died. Pita's mood changed a lot, and we contacted a local bird rescue about getting another conure. We ended up with a Green Cheek (He was listed as a maroon belly, but I think it's a GC) They seemed to get along fine, and we moved them both into the larger cage. Again, everything seemed fine at first. Lately, the green cheek has been showing dominant behavior towards the sun, and she seems increasingly afraid of him. Is there anything we can do to help these 2 get along?

Alternatively, would we have better luck with the same species? (2 suns tend to get along better than sun+GC?) We've stayed in contact with the bird rescue, and could still work something out.

Thanks in advance!

Taking in my experience with a GCC and reading about other people's I think they are very dominant little birds. Seem to want to rule the household and you too. While they are so so cute and cuddly there is another side that comes out when there is a different species of bird living with them. The one I had totally bullied my Grey until he was injured X3. I found GCC another home where could be safe and loved but I sure do miss him. My suggestion to you is to get another sun.

They should have separate cages. Wasn't clear if they are sharing a cage. Not a good idea if they are. The GCC will for sure rule the roost. Free play would be better between them if they aren't sharing a cage.

Very true.

I used to have parrotlets, and then I got Rusty and Scooter. When I went to play with the parrotlets, Rusty (followed by Scooter) would shriek at the top of their lungs.

But they didn't spaz over the inclusion of Rosie or Tybbi, so - from personal experience - I dare say they are comparatively tolerant of birds they recognize as conures.

Of course, Rosie and Rusty WILL fight if an opportunity comes up so I never let them out of their cages at the same time. :(

Tybbi's too new and, if nothing else, is territorial about his cage but loves watching Rosie somersault from a distance of 7 feet...

Thank you all. They do share a cage. It wasn't a problem when it was the 2 suns, and these 2 seemed to be doing well. I'll have to dig out his old cage. I'm thinking this guy might be better in a single bird home.

Would I have better luck with another Sun? (or something similar, like a jenday)

Thanks again

Please do something very soon as that GCC will continue to pester the Sun until that Sun has had enough. That is going to result in an injured GCC! I recommend if you want a buddy for your Sun, get another Sun.

I agree with Molly... Get another Sun... Suns are gentle birds.. Green Cheeks on the other hand are very aggressive birds towards bigger birds.

If I have my GCC's out with my alexandrine, they will attack him...

Definitely separate the cages if you want to give the GCC a shot. Otherwise, get the Sun

GCC are very bossy and have to be king of the house. You want to separate those two before someone gets hurt.
