Welcome to the forums :)

I'm giving your thread a little 'bump', so that hopefully some members with budgie experience can chime in. ;)

They are both very pretty!!

Hi! The stripes on the heads are a little receded for 2-3 months from what I can remember when I had budgies. I would say they may be a little older. But whatever age, they are adorable! I love budgies.

I can't tell how old they are but they look to be older than 3 - 4 months. If they were that young the black bars would be almost to the top of the cere.

They certainly look older than three to four months, but they could be less than a year given those cere's still look pretty neutral?

Agreed...they don't have that baby faced look of a just-weaned bird but usually older budgies have a blue (male) or pink/tan (female) cere color. I don't know if cere color is 100% accurate but in their case, I think it's safe to say they're younger birds - maybe 6 months?

EDIT: As for gender, I think they're a little too young to tell. Better pictures would help. It does look like the green bird's cere is a bit more blue but from these pictures, both could be young birds of either gender.

As for age, they have already lost their "baby bars" on their foreheads with their first molt, which typically happens at around 4 months. They still have solid dark eyes though, which also tells me they're still very young. Some color mutations will keep solid eyes, but with yours, they will have white rings around the dark pupil upon maturity. The eye lightening starts in some around 8 months, although my English girl Mink is almost 11 months and her eyes are still dark unless you look in good light.

I'd say the gender of the green is a female for sure. The blue I'm going to say female too, judging by these pics. Accurate pics of budgie ceres are best done in natural daylight. Regardless of color mutation, a male at this age will have a cere that is more of a solid pinky- lavender color. A female who is either young or not in breeding condition, will typically have a 'chalky' whitish cere with a tint of light blue on the outsides, which can look fairly 'blue' in pics, although it is lighter than the unmistakable bright blue of mature males.

I hope this helps :).

I would guess they are under 6 months old at least.... and the green is a female, blue one is a male.

I have no experience with budgies, but I have to say these two are beautiful!

Green - Definitely female!
Blue - Definitely male!

I would put them about 4 months in age? Old enough to go through a molt but not old enough to have adult eye coloration, which they should get fully at 6 months.

Upon looking at the new pics, again, the green is for sure female as I said before. The blue might be changing into the bright blue cere of a male, but as far as the pics show, is still not a mature shade of 'male' blue.

Eye color change varies. Usually a hint of change starts at over 6 months. Mink is 11 months old (for sure, I waited til she was weaned to get her so I know her age) and her eyes are only halfway lightened still.

RavensGryf, have you shared pictures of Mink anywhere? Would love to see her! :)

Here's a fairly recent pic of Mink, showing her cere changing for the first time into adult color. It's a bit more brown than this now :)

I have some nice baby pics I'd like to post as well, but Photobucket is giving me upload errors right now. I'll post them when I can.

Here is Mink as a juvenile at about 2 months old.

Showing how English budgies "hair" typically covers the eyes, unless they're in an alert stance :)

Mink has lovely colors! Love how the blue is so subtle in her younger pics! Her older picture makes her look so regal!

Thank you for sharing Mink's pictures. :)

Thanks Monica. She has a color that doesn't always photograph well, so that's frustrating. She's Olive, single factor violet. She looks a muddy color often in pics. In real life, and in the right lighting she will have more blue than that current pic, but not quite as much as she did as a juvenile. I love her throat spots now!

Yes, her throat spots are absolutely stunning! I would have thought she was a Goldenface (parblu) mutation with the amount of blue coloration in her feathers! :D
