Help / Advice on picking species

Ill have to look more into ring necks and senegals. Is one any better, personality, or talking wise, then the other? I know some smaller birds arent into being touched as much, and i love the cuddly birds!

We have a Sennie. She came from a bit of a rough background and I would hesitate to offer it to you as "the norm" ... so I won't. But, she has come around nicely. Cuddly? With my hubby yes, beginning to with me. But again, that is her background, not as a species-wide type thing.

She barks commands at the Border Collies: Get Back! Sit down! Lie down! She whispers, "Hello" suggestively to my husband who she loves heart and soul tremendously. She tells me "C'mere! c'mere!"

A little funny story about Cecil ... when we first got her I was working insane hours and I felt horrible about leaving her alone for hour on end. I rented the video (the name escapes me) that was solely migratory birds (no human voices on it at all); I would run home and rewind it and start it over for her between clients, give her a kiss and was on my way back to work. After the third day, she bagan Quacking like a duck! It was then that I figured she was sick and tired of the video!

Her voice is "robotic"; she is very precious to us. She has just begun letting me pick her up at her back and twisting her over and I play tummy scritch games with her.

She's come a long way. And, is very much an integral part of our family.

Ah ha! (old age sucks), I just remembered the name of the video ... "Winged Migration" (thanks to the help of Google! LOL).

here it is on Amazon:

[ame]http://www.amazon.com/Winged-Migration-Philippe-Labro/dp/B0000D0YXW/ref=sr_1_1/103-0630921-6991843?ie=UTF8&s=video&qid=1185571979&sr=1-1[/ame]

Much to Cecil's dismay, iffen I can find it on DVD, I will purchase a copy and play it from my 'putor for d'birdies. It is good "wild" socialization for them. And, it is just a good movie nonetheless. :)

Ok, so I fell in love with a white bellied Caique. Think I may get him... Anyone have one of these little guys?

I don't think anyone here has any caiques, but that was exactly what I wanted when I got Iggy (an Amazon) instead...just from research I know that they are known as little clowns who love to "hair surf" and play on their backs and just overall have a good time. I'm sure though that just like any parrot, they can have attitude problems and behavior issues if not raised properly...I saw one on youtube who had to be distracted during dinner so as not to attack one of the guests at the table...but again, every bird is an individual and you'll find some of that type in every breed...How old is the bird you are looking at, what is his history, etc? Whatever you decide, I wish you luck, I'm sure you'll pick a great fid!

Not here, but they are beautiful. Let us know what you decide.

From what I have heard / read caiques are little goofy clowns that go go go all day long. They seem (although I've never 'known' any caiques) to be allot like an outgoing lovebird. Any thoughts?

They are real clowns, I don't think I've ever known one not be, even babies are clowns. :D They would definately keep you entertained.

Pretty sure Im going to get a the little caique. Is there any age thats better, or worse? One shop has a few that are almost done weaning, and another has some that are a little older.

What about baby birds? Ive heard there personlaties change when they get older, and can act like completely diff birds? Would it be better to get a mature bird?

From my personal experience, I would go with a mature bird, as my bird def changed when he reached maturity...however, he is a male Amazon and they are kind of known for that...it may be different with caiques. I recommend that you do research on sexual maturity in caiques and see what that brings up. I wish I had done more research on this topic 5 years ago.

Think there are pros and cons with both ages, I personally would go with baby, and do research on the sexual maturity thing.

With larger birds that would be different, I think I'd have to do a heck of a lot of research then decide.

Again a resuce bird would be a definate older bird. :D

I would back both Peta and Minzer on this one ...

I agree with Peta as that newly weaned birds are easier to train and more willing to try new experiences (of course, depending on the bird) ...

Minzer's point, you know what you are getting with an older bird ... they are set in their ways, they are mature and hopefully they are well trained when you get them ...

If you get an older bird make sure they are trained well, if you get a baby bird make sure you have the time to spend to properly train them!
