Hello OvO New and looking for bird friends

Hello there! I regularly browse these forums, however I only recently decided to join. Just now actually, heh.

A little about me, I'm a 20 year old artist from Texas, and I've loved animals all my life. I've had many different kinds growing up, and currently have 3 cats, a dog, leopard gecko and a rat (soon to be more rats). I do not currently have a bird, but after months of research I will be adopting either a mustache parakeet or a cockatiel from a breeder in a few months! I'm super excited. I'd fallen in love with cockatiels but wanted something a bit more exotic and found out about the mustache parakeets and the breeder I was looking into has some. The way they sound is adorable and I love their eyes.

Ultimately it will come down to individual birds, so who knows what I'll leave with, really.

I'd love to make some new friends in the bird community, it's new ground for me. I owned some budgies as a kid but was overwhelmed since they didn't really enjoy my company and bit me a lot, so we gave them to a friend of ours. The bird itch is surfacing again however and I decided it was time to try again, but with a bird that's not as flighty as a budgie.

Moluccan and umbrella cockatoos are my favorite parrots, however I don't think I'd ever be fully prepared to take one on.

Hello and welcome. Laughing at the budgies part of your text LOL. Good idea to admire from afar the 'toos. As Scott says they often chose us, which is better really.

Well, I'm an old Amazon Snob from the Great White North! I have loved and lived with Amazons for a bit more than twice the time you have been keeping your place in this World warm!

If there is one thing that I have learned, it is that when ever possible, allow the Parrot to choose you! When they choose you its like kick starting a relationship since bonding is such an important part of the Parrot /Human interaction.

Another is; Fur and Feathers is not an assure safe World for the feathered side of the formula. Feathers are often seen as dinner by the Fur side.

And, just one more; The reason for allowing them to choose is that in reality they have no reason to trust us! Each and everyday, we (the Humans) need to provide clear reasons for them to trust us!

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Feathers! Understand that it is a very different World and be fully open to adjusting yourself to their World.

Welcome and be welcomed. Ditto on letting the bird choose you if possible. If you go cockatiel there are tons of owners here for advice , mustache 'keets not so many, in fact few.

Make sure you can afford a parrot/bird. Cage, fresh foods and Vet bills can add up to quite a bit, vet bills exceptionally so. My vet is a $100 for a check up and exam.

Make sure you have the TIME for a parrot/bird. Most need several hours every day out of cage and should have a min of 1 hour of your uninterrupted attention every day.
In my 20's between school, band, friends and partying, I would not have had 20 minutes every day for anything. Parrots are a big longterm commitment.
