Hello i am new to the forum.
I am a beginner bird owner and i dont believe in 'starter birds'. I have met large birds and handled them before. I am comfortable handing x large birds. I would like to ask between a lesser sulphur crested cockatoo and eclectus which one makes a better companion parrot.
What i look in for a bird:
Friendly
Cuddly but doesnt ALWAYS need to be on me
Talk ( doesnt really matter tho)
Loving
Thanks,
Aaliyah

Any birds can be friendly if they are well tamed/bonded.

Both are kinda cuddly. (The cockatoos will be more needy and if I'm not wrong, for Eclectus they required special dietary)

For talking wise, I will go with the Eclectus. Cockatoos are not known for their talking abilities but they are known for their cuddly behavior (Sometimes needy and loud in vocals).

I'd go for the Eclectus. Just read up more on their diets etc.

And also cockatoo will produce lots of dander, which are 'dusty' compared to Eclectus.

Read up more about them and choose wisely.

Welcome to the forums, Aaliyah!

CtrL's response gave a great highlight of the two species. There can be differences among all the species. I have an Eclectus that talks well but is friendly to just one person - me! Some of my Cockatoos are very clingy, others more independent even though they were raised the same way. Parrots really do have individual personalities.

If you are able to spend time at a bird rescue, large breeder, or pet store, you can learn a lot about each species by observing and handling them. Very often a particular bird will choose you!!

Good luck with your search, and thanks very much for understanding there are no "starter birds!!"

Thank you for all the replies. I will surely look into Eclectus parrots. I have some questions. Every how many minutes do they poop cause i searched it up and google doesnt seem to know.
Ps. I will try to look for a rescue where I can spend time with different parrots.
Thanks.:p

They poop every 15 min, approx. Get stock in Kleenex or Scott tissue companys. You'll make yourself rich.

Ouch, that must have hurt! Glad it turned out well.

No worries about posting at your local time, some members are night owls. We also have several in Australia and the Middle-East, just a few time zones away!

Ouch! Glad you are good!

Not being afraid, the reaction can be learned. Remember, in most cases, you are stronger, and out weigh the dog!
I adapted a large German shepherd, former guard dog. Second day, he came at me, for sure a bluff, but still! Well, I grabbed him by the collar and rump, picked him up into the air, body slammed him on the ground! Flipped him on his back and bit him as hard as I could, on the neck. With his fur, I am sure he felt little, and yes, a heavy shedder! The embarrassing thing, I did this as an angry reaction, not training! But it sure worked!
I have been bitten many times over the years. The important thing is not to pull away to avoid tearing!
I only backed down once, a few years ago, two Dobermans broke into our yard. They were young, and didn't have the body weight yet, so I felt I could handle them. To protect the kids, I made myself a threat to them ( make yourself bigger, do nonstandard movements). Well these two suckers started working together to take me down! Two options! Take one out, high probability of significant personal injury- plus the family and neighbors would see a side of me not so nice! Or, back down, and give them a way out! Much better choice!
Thinking back, more luck than skill!

Thanks guys.Awesome stories you have this is my first time i have ever been bitten by a dog.
It happened when we were walking down the road to buy some eggs when i looked back and saw two white dogs following us.(they were friendly) So i reached my hand out but i didnt click. I saw that he was scared so i backed away. After 2 minutes of walking, i looked back again and there was a female(had babies but they were not with her) black dog in the middle. So i was 3m away from her i reached my hand out hoping she would be friendly but she showed a mixed signal, wiggling her tail but growling , now im talking about the type of tail wag when the owner comes back and the dog greets you. So i heard the growl and i walked away to my grandma. We carried on walking for like 30 seconds until we were gonna pass the dogs house, she( black dog) ran and bit me in the right leg. I shouted out to my grandma, grandma the dog bit me and she ran to me asking which dog . Well, at the time the dog ran back into its house. I spotted a few puppies behind a bush, so i thought it was probably just protecting its babies. My dad said the same thing just added she probably mentaly weird because of the mixed signals but some people in the village who dont know the story say its my fault that i reached my hand out.
Ps. That dog has bitten more than 4 people already. My wound looks like a hole and some scratches.
Thanks for reading,
Aaliyah
