Hello,
just found this forum in my search for information on amazon parrots.
I currently have 2 adopted birds, a 15yr old milligold macaw (assumed female) Lucy and a 30+yr old moluccan2 (assumed male)Marco that i have have for around a year and a half or so. they came home within a week or so of each other but the Milligold came first, my boyfriend and I worked with her at the rescue facility for about a month after making the decision to adopt her and having visited her for a few weeks leading up to the decision, so she was our first bird other than each having had a cockatiel as a child. and then the day we went to go bring home Lucy, Marco had been surrendered that morning, and i fell in love with him so we adopted him too, since at the time the macaw did NOT like me.
i am now interested in a third bird, we did have a old lady yellow collar macaw for about a year, she had a lot of health issues and was quite old and had been on a bad diet so we took her in knowing she wouldn't live very long, and she had a good final year of all the treats she wanted and human affection on her terms. but she recently passed and now I'm missing that smaller counterpart to the flock.
i am also interested to learn about free flight with older birds if anyone has experience. the only people i have been able to talk to about free flight have trained the birds from the time they where being hand fed and did the hand feeding themselves. i am open to the possibility of getting a baby bird, but it is much more in my heart to get another rescue. especially as it makes me very nervous that the birds will out live me and i won't have anyone to take over the care of them for me.
Looking forward to learning and sharing with everyone here.
