Hi! New to the forum (obviously). I have recently purchased my first blue fronted amazon parrot, Sassy :green:(and yes, she is!...lol) She is suppose to be 12 years old. I bought her from a man who is disabled and can no longer care for her. She looks to be in very good condition, but her surroundings, not so much. He had her for about 4 years and did not handle her much at all and she was not out of her cage much because he couldn't get her back in.

I used to have parakeets and cockatiels, but not for some time and I decided it was time for another bird. I was originally thinking cockatiel, but then I came across Sassy. I have ALOT of work ahead of me to tame her! She is sweet, but does not want to be touched. I can touch her feet and sometimes her beak through the bars of her cage, but not when I put my hand inside the cage. She will do a sort of "handshake" with my husbands finger. I can feed her by hand inside the cage and my granddaughter feeds her through the cage bars. I have had her out of her cage a few times and once I got her to stand on my shoulder. Although it took me over an hour to get her to do it, and she only stayed for maybe a minute.

I really hope I can get her calmed enough to hold her! She is already spoiled and "yells" for us whenever we leave the room. She started talking up a storm after she was here for a couple days...and she sings an opera song. I don't know how much I can teach her as far as speaking, but I certainly will try!

So, that's our story! I'm sure I will need lots of help/advice in the future so I thank you in advance!;)

Hello and welcome!
Sassy sounds like a great girl & I am happy for you that she is now a part of your family:)
I would be careful putting her on your shoulder for now, before you can really read her as you might sustain a bad bite on the face. We have a few of our birds we allow on our shoulders, and others that I would not trust at all up there:)
I'd love to see pictures of her when you have time!

Welcome to PF!!!!

I would suggest looking into target training her so you can learn how to easily get her in and out of her cage, which can also help with handling her. It's a great way to start a good, solid foundation in learning how to communicate with her! :)

Hi welcome. This is the place to come and learn about your Amazon! Several regular people here have a BFA also.

Thanks for all the welcomes! I have been looking at target training and I ordered a "clicker". Funny, I was worried about her being on my shoulder, after she was already on my shoulder..lol. She was chewing on my hair and hairclip and I she actually broke my hairclip...that's when I realized it probably wasn't a good idea...lol. I will reserve my shoulder for later, after I know we trust each other! I will post pics as soon as I figure out how to get them from my phone to here...
