Hi! New to the forum (obviously). I have recently purchased my first blue fronted amazon parrot, Sassy (and yes, she is!...lol) She is suppose to be 12 years old. I bought her from a man who is disabled and can no longer care for her. She looks to be in very good condition, but her surroundings, not so much. He had her for about 4 years and did not handle her much at all and she was not out of her cage much because he couldn't get her back in.
I used to have parakeets and cockatiels, but not for some time and I decided it was time for another bird. I was originally thinking cockatiel, but then I came across Sassy. I have ALOT of work ahead of me to tame her! She is sweet, but does not want to be touched. I can touch her feet and sometimes her beak through the bars of her cage, but not when I put my hand inside the cage. She will do a sort of "handshake" with my husbands finger. I can feed her by hand inside the cage and my granddaughter feeds her through the cage bars. I have had her out of her cage a few times and once I got her to stand on my shoulder. Although it took me over an hour to get her to do it, and she only stayed for maybe a minute.
I really hope I can get her calmed enough to hold her! She is already spoiled and "yells" for us whenever we leave the room. She started talking up a storm after she was here for a couple days...and she sings an opera song. I don't know how much I can teach her as far as speaking, but I certainly will try!
So, that's our story! I'm sure I will need lots of help/advice in the future so I thank you in advance!
