Corky Orange Winged Amazon
Hello, I have just found this forum, we have an orange winged amazon called Corky:green:. I have never owned parrots before but Corky was left with my partner when his mum passed away. He is quite a shy bird, I am hoping to get some tips on how to get him a bit more confident. He seems a happy chappy, talks and whistles and loves to have his head scratched. He also finds delight in calling the dogs in andthen telling them to 'get out!' followed by 'good boy corky'. He is never shut in his cage, the top is open all the time and he has a long rope around the top of the room. He hasnt got his wings clipped but is a terrible at flying and tends to crash land! He doesnt fly very often at all, and is never very keen to leave his cage.
I have read that sunflower seeds are not a healthy food for parrots, but all the readily avaliable parrot foods in the local petshops seem to be almost 100% sunflower. Everyday he has a bowl of fresh fruit in his cage, oranages, bananas and grapes are his favourite along with cherry tomatoes and lettuce.
Hopefully browseing this forum I can get some more tips on keeping Corky in tip-top condition.

Thanks in advance Sophie

Hi Sophie and welcome to the forum:)

I am also in the UK:)

I am sure Corky will adapt soon.. He is just getting used to his new surroundings. Jus t keep talking to him and try to involve him in everything you do. Make sure you get him plenty of toys to keep him occupied.

Sunflower seeds are not good for Amazons! I buy all my food on line from here....
Scarletts Parrot Essentials - Toys, Cages, Stands and More!

The Tidymix seed is the best, plus try and get him on the Harrisons pellets as well! I give my Amazon 60% tidymix and 40% pellets, plus plenty of fruit, veg, brown rice, pasta, pulses, sweet potato etc.

She passed away 10years ago! I have known Corky for 3 years now. I think in between his original owner passing away and me arriving here he was left to own devices and kept in his cage. I was just hoping after all this time he would start becoming a bit more trusting. I am the only one in the family to feed and clean him, and socialise with him.
Thanks for the website I will have a look
