Hello All! My name is Emma, i'm 27 and live in Cambridgeshire. I do not own a parrot..........so why have I joined your community?

Recently a friend of mine told me she may be emigrating and cannot take her bird with her. After discovering that my partner had an african grey as a child, and has been around birds before, we became ideal adoptive parents. Whilst my partner is delighted and very excited (he has always wanted another african grey), i am a little more apprehensive. Excitedly apprehensive though.

The bird in question is a 3 year old male blue fronted amazon. His name is Bailey and he is gorgeous. However he was reared as a chick by my friend and i am worried that he will not bond with us if we take him on.

I have no experience with birds at all, so i have no idea what to expect. So i have joined your community to prepare myself. I want to make sure i can give Bailey the best life i can possibly give him if we take him on. I am very aware that a bird is for life, and often not a pet but a member of the family.

So i hope you can welcome me into your community, even if i feel like an imposter not actually having a bird.........yet.

hey emma and welcome

main thing is to find out as much about bailey's routine as possible, likes and dislikes, if he is already use to being handled by your friend, i think ofter an initial settling in period, he will settle into your routines well. but you must both visit bailey as much as possible, this way you will have a good idea how he will behave. and if you are comfortable with him

do lots of reaserch and ask alot more specific questions, find out if there is a good vet that deal with parrots near you and costs! before taking him on

like yourself, i've never been a bird person but since gettin nut of my brother, i won't be without her, she's like the little girl i've never had! her settling in period was difficult as she was in season at the time, but she is near perfect now, mean streak included :)

Hi there Little Em and welcome. Not to worry with some education and research on your part Baily will bond with you and your partner. I suggest first if you can get the book Parrots for Dummies. It is an excellent starting point and a very valuabel resource. There are also several web sites where you can find information. If you study the life and location of the wild Amazons you will have some background on what their needs are. The nutritional needs of an Amazon will easilly be met as I understand they are not picky eaters and tend to be overweight if anything. You will need to make your home safe for Baily. You can best learn this by reading. There are many toxins in our homes that can cause bad things to happen to parrots. You can make your own toys when you see how they are made. Non toxic cleaners like vinegar, grapefruit seed extract and lemon juice can be used to clean the cage. Parrots are very social and respond well when socialized. This is just a small bit of what it takes to be a guardian of a parrot. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Emma, glad to have you joining us.
I have only been a guardian to one African Grey, never two birds at one time.
Sure other members will give their input, sharing their experiences etc.
Good luck
