Has anyone here qurentined their bird?

Rats. :p. Oh well better to keep them apart for 1-2 months than not have either of them and waste a bucket load of money........

By George I Think He's Got It !!!

Is that some kind of insult? :p I've just never tried this kind of thing before and it all just sounds really paranoid. ;)

Actually, all pets should be quarantined or get a clean bill of health from a vet before they're allowed to interact with current family pets. Most people just never do it. This is why most rescues and responsible breeders strongly encourage new owners to see a vet before they even take the dog/puppy/cat/kitten home.

I think we'll be way to tired to go the vet after we get the bird. It'll be a 4 hour drive to go and get him(and 4 hours back) and I don't think we'll take him to the vet once we get home. :p I'll try to get him in 2 days after. ;)

If you are going to have them in the car together, forget about the quarantine. It does not take long to be exposed to diseases, and a blanket is not going to stop the transfer of anything.. It is not as urgent for Peeps to get to the vet as it would be your new bird. Just get your new one to the vet first, get them cleared, and THEN get your other one in. And no, you can't have them "meet" and not spread any disease. Just be patient, they need to be completely separated. I really don't know how many other ways we can say it.

Just imagine what would happen if she ever just spoke her mind :p..., Gotta love her ;)

lol, Thanks Bobby! :p

Glad we have someone like GC to 'tell it like it is'. Sometimes thats what is needed, we can't 'sugar coat' everything lol:cool:

According to this thread you are saying that you will not quarantine:

http://www.parrotforums.com/questions-answers/5448-sharing-cage.html

Well I think i'll just take the risk...........

I'm not going to pay 300-500$ just to get some silly test done, and i'm still going to get another bird....

You also said that there are no vets around so a general checkup is not going to happen. Plus you said that you do not have the space so you can/will not quarantine.

sFun_bangdesk-1.gif

I am sorry, but any owner of any animal who do not follow the simple rules of having the new pet checked and quarantined should not have pets in the first place!

You also said:
I'm wondering if I were to put Peeps and the green cheek in the cage at the same time if they would have much aggression over territory.
The answer:

I have learned one thing Parrotlets do NOT take kindly to other birds in their space they are extremely territorial.

Oh do you guys think it would be alright if their cages are both in the same room? I'm tight on space and I think if I were to put them closer together it would help. I sure hope they get along!!! One of the reasons i'm getting this bird is so Peeps can have a playmate.)
The answer:

when I brought Bingo home and Manny and him were placed near one another even though they were both still youngsters they were ready for battle and locked claws on my bed.
Ok good, I was afraid that they might get distressed and start plucking feathers. Ugg I sure hope Peeps dosn't become jealous or anything. I will try to include them BOTH in all activities.
The answer:

With the new one being a conure he May just well kill the parrotlet I can assure you one thing the parrotlet will not back down
i have two Black capped conures and I can not have them and the parrotlets even babies out together

So PLEASE invest in a cage for each bird and spend that 30 days spending time bonding with the new one in another room That also is a good idea as it helps you have bond time without jealousy from the parrotlet and he will get jealous

If you are not prepared to follow any advice, think it is paranoid and silly then why are you asking? On other forums this is called trolling.

Wildheart I thought the exact same thing!
First the best form of quarentine is to have the bird in a separate building, all together. While this is impossible for most of us my avian vet suggests the following.
Quarentine 30-90 days.
Separate room with closed door.
Turn air vents off in room, cover with heavy duty plastic.
Place rolled up towel at opening at bottom of the door.
Keep 2nd pair of shoes in room and remove when leaving room.
Handle, feed and clean your established bird first.
Clean cage and clean food bowls well. Never interchange bowls between birds.
Remove dirty cage cleanings to outside of house immediately.
Place clothes immediately in washer.
Shower
I have to say that I know of many who did not quarentine and lost several of thier flock.
Isn't it better to be safe then sorry?

Actually I called my local vet yesterday and they actually do do health checks for parrots. :D I'm so happy! I actually after looking around the house was able to find a temporary spot for the Green Cheek.(btw i'm totally going to quarantine, i'm just saying! New shoes after you enter the room? Sorry if I sound so ignorant but seriously, i've NEVER heard of anyone doing this before........)

I've decided I'm going to check for the Conures health first and then wait 2 months or so and then check Peep's health. I'm going to be tight on money after I buy this bird since I have to get him a whole new cage and toys and all those neccessity's. I'm going to keep the conure in our basement(don't worry it'll still be summer and if it get's cold i'll cover him)and Peeps in our loft(or in other words, the same spot)Since my bro's leaving for college at the end of Summer i'll be able to move both birds into the same room afer the quarantine. Some of you say 30 days, some say 60-90. I think i'm going to do 45, how does that sound? I'm so happy though, I found out I don't have to feed the Conure a different type of food than Peeps so I won't have to buy more food until like January. :D

Sorry for not agreeing with some of you, you're all be very helpful and without me joining the forum I might have be heart-broken 2 months later by the death of both my birds. :( Thanks again! :D

Here's something I just thought of. Breeders have ton's of birds next to eachother when they're in like those multiple cages. Do they get sick and die as well?

Yep, this is why a good breeder is so stringent about hygiene. A good breeder would also have isolation areas as well. I'm no breeder, but its just common sense. If you think about it, one of the main reasons you need to quarantine your new bird is that it may have picked something up from the breeder, pet shop or rescue. This is the whole point of it.

New question that came up. Can I hold the conure in a room, leave, and then hold Peeps in the same room?(after i've washed my hand and am done with all the sanitation things)

See we have an open house with a huge room. Our dining room is connected to our living room and kitchen plus our hallways. Those are one of the most popular places i'm with my birds. So will I have to choose which one I hold in these places? I sure hope I make it to 45 days......

Basically the new bird should only be in the one room until the quarentine is over with that way there is NO shared air space.

I sure hope I make it to 45 days......

I don't understand what the hell is so hard about this??? If you can't even do THAT for your birds, how do you expect to make other big decisions that comes along with owning any pet, but especially parrots? If you are questioning whether you can make it through the quarantine or not, don't get another bird.

GC I'm compleatly in agreeance with you. From the sounds of it a stuffed bird would be best for them

You have got to be kidding!!! 6 pages of posts in this thread with folks trying to help you and you obviously haven't or won't take any of the advise given, and that advise has been pretty simple and straight forward, you have to understand that having a companion bird is being responsable for a living breathing being, they are NOT here strictly for your amusment, in todays "throw away" society I think that fact is grossly overlooked, if your not willing to do the things that are needed to keep them healthy and safe, then maybe you should reconsider about bringing another bird into your home until you are............

It's hard because I hold Peeps a lot and he's usually in every part of the room. I don't see why you have to lose your patience. I AM following your guys advice. And i've had at least 10 birds in our house so I know what to do on "big decisions"

And it's not bad to be worried about the quarantine. What if I mess up, i've been reading and it sounds pretty dangerous to other birds, so i'm trying to be cautious and think this through.

Being concerned is all fine and good, but when you say "Gee, I hope I make it through the 45 days..." you're saying that you don't have the patience to follow it through, which put your birds at risk! If you're that overly concerned about it, why would you say something like that? Doesn't make sense to me.

And I'm also sure you have closed off bedrooms and that they are not part of the "whole big room", so quarantine your new bird in there, and keep Peeps completely out until the quarantine is up. When you interact with the new bird, just keep him in your room. They need to stay completely apart, and this also means shared air spaces (they must stay behind closed doors).

I really do hope you are sincere and are taking this seriously, because it really is serious. We may sound like we're going over board, but things can and do happen. As the saying goes, better to be safe than sorry.

I hope so...... (Sorry if that sounded mean) You should've seen me when I got Bartleby and I qurantined him. He was on the other side of my hous from S'mores, separated by 3 closed doors (bedroom door, hallway door, living room door) When I wanted to interact with Bartleby, I had special clothes I wore with him only (and they're in the garbage now) And my qurantine was 3 months with 2 vet trips in there (He was finally moved into my room two weeks ago since I adopted him in May). He got one blood test and was clean. S'mores was forbidden to go in the room Bartleby was in and NOTHING was shared between them. It all payed off, no illnesses or diseases to worry about. There's an example you can try to use if you want.
