I just had his nails filed at the vet's office about 2 weeks ago and she could barely take off any of the nail length due to how far out his quick is on all of the nails..

Does anyone have an insight on why it's not receding? Any tips would be much appreciated. :green:

Just wondering what the vet had to say about it?

Is it possible his nails weren't long to begin with?

I very rarely - if ever - have to do my birds' nails, and IF I do, I use a dremel. It's very gentle and I've never seen a drop of blood. I believe the dremel cauterizes the blood if you accidentally remove too much. If you use sandpaper dremel bit, be careful, as it works VERY quickly. The stone bit goes slower, but it heats up if used for long.

The vet said that I should cut his nails more frequently so that the quick recedes a bit. His nails are definitely a bit long :/

I also use a dremel for both my birds and dogs. I use it more to blunt the needle tips than anything and there's no chance of bleeding that way. My sennie needs it about once a month.

Sometimes I think Freds nails are getting long but when I look at them they aren't long, just sharp so I throw the concrete perch in the cage for a day or two so they file down.

I heard if you go for long periods of time the quick will grow to much inside the nail. So you need to trim the quick back and that means bleeding. It also means you need to be cutting your birds nails more often.

Yes, cut his nails more often, a tiny bit at a time if need be. The quick will start to recede slowly.

I noticed the quick on Casper's nails were nearly to the tip when I first got him. I got him lots of filing perches and file weekly if I can and over the last year it has receeded a significant amount, and looks much healthier now. It's a process, but does indeed work.
