Is there a way to tell if the bag of Harrison's Bird Food is fresh. The reason why I am asking is because I bought a bag and the bag was sealed but there was air inside the bag. I did taste it and it was crunchy. So how can I tell if the bird food is fresh.

If you look on the back of the food bag, it actually discusses freshness and what you can do to preserve it. For the most part though, it's kind of the same deal as a bag of chips. They're as fresh as when you first opened them. After that, the air can do its work and cause it to go stale.

I don't think any bags state when they've been produced or a best-before date.

The Harrison's company is really conscious about freshness issues. Their bags are made to keep the organic product fresh as possible. They recommend it be used within 4-6 weeks, not because it goes stale on the 7th week, it's so the nutrients will have their optimal potency.

As far as it feeling like there's air inside a new bag, that's normal, it never feels vacuum packed. Like Dinosrawr said, it's like a new bag of chips.

ps... There is a 'use by' date stamp on the bottom of the bag. :)

so what does harrison bird food taste like?
Pretty good!

I eat mine with milk, it makes a GREAT morning breakfast cereal !! :D

Another note: I remember reading on the Harrison's website that you can keep it in the frig to prolong freshness (like Julie said, its all about the nutrients having their optimal potency)

Thanks, Julie! I was wondering where on earth it was... never thought to look on the bottom of the bag. Now I know!

Quite disgusting Joe :26:

You know, I am probably one of the few people who has NEVER tasted pet food before. I think many people when they were kids or teenagers tried dog food. Although bird pellets sound much less gross, to me it's so unappealing that I just can't do it. Well WAIT. I can do it if you paid me lol. Heck for enough money I'd eat a whole teaspoon full!

I have Nutriberries Popcorn, and my mouth waters when I smell it. It smells like caramel corn. It's popcorn with small seeds and stuff stuck to it. The seeds turned me off. :smile005:

LOL Very Funny!!

But seriously humans should never eat pet food of any kind, I know with dog and cat food they can actually contain salmonella, you should always wash your hands after handling any kind of pet food !!

REALLY?!

Then I guess not surprising since it doesn't need to go through the same food safety protocols as human grade food. I think bird pellets are okay since birds can become ill and probably die from salmonella. Harrison's is human grade, so go ahead and eat it with milk Joe, but that's some pretty expensive cereal!

Over the years I can't tell you how many times I have heard about it

From the info I have gotten most of the time a small amount won't "hurt" the pet BUT the same amount can really make a human sick

Like you said, I don't think its a problem in bird food

"but that's some pretty expensive cereal"

Ha HA Ha, Very Funny!! You got that right huh ?

BTW, Why are you up so late :D

Thanks for all your answers, I forgot to mention I get two bags of it and I have the first bag open so will I put the second bag into the fridge, to keep it fresh for longer until I use it.

Also, the freezer was recommended by my vet to extend shelf life. It comes out cold, but doesn't get frozen, and will become room temperature before long.

@Joe - I have noticed YOU are always up way past MY bedtime! You're 3 hours ahead of me!

The bag should have a kind of farm smell.
I keep a 5lb bag in the freezer,it will last me 2,5months with 4green cheeks.
They actually like it beter when it is just out off the freezer.

Yup i was/am one off those people who eat animal foods.
When i was young i ate cate food and dogsnacks like chips and still sample my birds new foods to see how it taste like,if they don't want it they i at least know wether or not it is the taste.
