I want to get my Goffin Kia a harness so I can take her in the yard. ow do I know what size she would wear? Where is a good place to buy one?

The best harness is the aviator harness and you would want to get it in small. There's also the feather tether harness, I used it for Rosie because a pet store had it but I wouldn't recommend it. The feather tether has more metal on it making it front heavy, it's also bulkier and looser and if your bird is good at puzzles they can take the leash off. I tried using a feather tether on a cockatiel and poor Dante choked himself because the neck can tighten when he tries to get it off with his foot. Luckily I got him out of it and never used it again. This is another reason I prefer the aviator harness, the neck hole cannot tighten.

most pet stores don't sell parrot harness, but you can see it here on amazon and they also have their own website.

I never had or used a harness before. Are they hard to put on?

You would have to spend a lot of time getting your bird used to wearing the harness, they're only tricky to put on when you have an uncooperative bird.

It will be frightening to them at first, not many birds appreciate being 'restrained'.

I forgot to mention the leash is a little elastic and longer the the feather tether, this way if Rosie gets scared and tries to fly she isn't jerked to a stop and it's easier for me to maneuver the leash so she lands better. The only thing I don't like about the aviator is that the leash goes over her crop.

It takes patience, the aviator harness actually comes with a DVD teaching you how to train your bird to use it. Rosie never really liked hers and unfortunately when I started her on the feather tether I didn't train her right and I regret not knowing the proper way.

Is there a way I can get her used to it slowly? She is clipped but Im still afraid she might get away out there.

Yes, on the package it says get them used to it being around them before you try touching them with it. Also during that time work on getting her used to you opening her wings and touching her in ways that you would to put the harness on.

I got mine for my TAG from "My safe birdstore" She has the type of birds that it fits listed beside the sizes of harnesses.
It is the Aviator harness brand and it comes with a dvd to help you learn to use it. My Cosmo did pretty good with it and I like it better that the flightsuits with the little diapers, he does not like those to much . I do find it kind a hard to get off ,only because when I try to loosen the sliding part on the harness he knows it gonna come off and he doesn't like waiting .

Thank for all the help. Kia's really good with letting me pet her under her wings and letting me open up her wings. She actually loves it lol. I think Im going to order it and give it a try.

I just bought and used a feather tether for my baby goffin cockatoo. I bought a medium but need to get a small. He let me put it on him just fine. I agree with the others though that it is a bit heavy. I am hopeing the small will be a little lighter. hedoesnt seeem to mind it on though. 1
