Happy Arbor Day!!!

What does he plant who plants a tree?
He plants cool shade and tender rain,
And seed and bud of days to be,
And years that fade and flush again;
He plants the glory of the plain;
He plants the forest’s heritage;
The harvest of a coming age;
The joy that unborn eyes shall see–
These things he plants who plants a tree.

—Excerpt from The Heart of the Tree by Henry Cuyler Bunner (1855-1896)

" Garden as if your life depends upon it.”
— Dr. Doug Tallamy
Entomologist, University of Delaware

Plant something Native, bring diversity and life to your area. Many of these trees and shrubs are going extinct from whole zip codes. As developers only plant non native, or 1 or 2 types of trees, people have forgotten all our native beauties, or dont think about it and grab what's at big box stores. Visit plant nursery many carry natives.

"Bring birds to your home today by growing native plants. With Audubon's Native Plant Database, you can find the best plants for the birds in your area. " Since 1970, one third of North American Bird populations have declined. Backyard birds rely on thousands of caterpillars supplied by native plants."

We are loosing our 'old women' a white oak easily over 135 years old to oak wilt. Its take three years to kill the old women, but this year will be her last. We had placed a replacement 30' away that first year we noted the on-set. Sad to see a grand old tree die.

A very Happy Arbor Day.

thst is very heartbreaking! We had a 300+ oak blown down in a tornado. My parents took a chunk of wood and had it carved to an Oak tree mirror by a local artist. He carved one piece into a tree and the frame all one piece then put a mirror behind it, so gorgeous , and a way to honor and remember this glorious ancient tree. We still miss that tree!!
