hanhs macaw
hi there were new to site

we bought a hanhs macaw yesterday after meeting the people selling it we were suprised the bird was still alive

the cage took an hour to clean with a paint scrapper do to the amount of dried up poo all over the cage also only had 1 toy in cage and budgie type feed pots

they thought it funny to let it breath in pot/weed smoke also feeding it macdonalds burgers and chips and gave it larger to drink

i know it will be a long time to get it to trust us

could you give me some advice on how to get the bird to trust us also what would be the best to feed on as previous owners said that it will not eat parrot food

any help or advice would be greatly appriciated

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your little hahns! The first thing to do is have a full avian vet check up done. Sounding from what this little guy was exposed to it could have affected his organs and lungs and you just don't see the damage. Not to scare you. Also, try and purchase a new cage ASAP. You can see visible rust on the inside where he has excess too. This can be deadly.
Offer your guy fresh veggies, fruit and cooked rice, quinoa. Try to introduce a good pellet diet. Now is the time. Keep an eye on him and make sure he eats and drinks.
Spend time sitting by his cage and talking quietly. Drop a yummy nut or popcorn into his bowl and walk away. This way hey learns you don't expect anything from him in return. In time he will take the treat from your hand. Don't force him to come out or be touched as this will backfire on you. He needs to learn to trust you and build a bond. This takes patience and time.

Greycloud is spot on what I would suggest. The first thing is the vet check, the second biggie is to replace that cage which shows signs of rust. You can find used cages on Creigslist, but make sure and clean an steralize a used cage thoroughly from metal to wooden perches. Also make sure and check that the powder coating on the cage isn't missing anywhere. A great tool to use to clean and disinfect a cage is those hand held steamers.

Man wouldn't you just love to take previous owners of bird like those that had your Macaw and stuff them in a cage with minimal if any care and with the treatment they gave the bird. See how they would like it.

Thank you for saving this bird. He needs lots of your TLC. Please do take him to an avain vet like suggested. Very important!!

Thank you for taking on the responsibility of giving this poor bird the care it needs. Despite the abuse, it seems, at least visually, to be in not too bad shape. A vet visit is still mandatory.

Expect some fear, grumpiness, and even cage aggression for a while. It's been through a lot, and you would feel this way if it were you.

Patience and kindness are key. You must think of everything you do for it at this point as being for the bird's good only. It is not the time to try to get head scratches or sweet talk out of it. This can be hard to do, but keep with it. This bird needs a real friend and caregiver, and being a friend means not pushing.

Enjoy your new Hahn's. They sure are cute.

As everyone as said... get him to an Avian Vet ASAP.... and then go get him a new cage even if it is a small one and throw the other one away....

get new bowls for food and water and like everyone said, be patient.

Thank you for rescuing the fid.

I agree with getting him to an avian vet as soon as possible. I have a Hahn's macaw and she is a real love. One thing she really enjoys is while I am doing dishes/cleaning/doing homework/etc. is when I just talk to her and tell her what I am doing. She loves to always know what is going on. This helped me to build trust with her fairly quickly after I got her. Hahn's macaws are so funny & such big lovebugs. As a fellow Hahn's macaw owner feel free to ask me questions at any time :D

thanks for all your advice

really was sickened by the way he was treated

trying to find an avian vet in area as we live in wales in uk very hard to find as all farm vets here

Those people sounded like idiots!!! Thanks for saving him out of that situation!!! But I will say I do let my macaw try the food I eat. So even if its hamberger. He will scream until I give him some. Then he'll go mmmmmm.... just make sure you pick up a bird book cause there are some stuffs that you should not give!!! My macaw got on the table one night when we were having wine. I walked into the kitchen to grab something and came back with him drinking my wine. Let's say I was worried but he didn't drank much. But the rest of the night he was acting super funny, he was one drunk bird. Dancing and make funny noises, yes it was funny we couldn't help it. We learned from early on not to leave stuffs sitting unattended cause they're nosy!

LOL yes, angel is the same, any food or drink left she's straight on it...never a dull moment with a macaw!!!
