My wife has been giving me the side eye since yesterday afternoon! Why? Well, it might have something to do with how hard I was laughing over her... situation with a certain unexpected suitor.
Yep! Jolly's growing up. Sigh...
Yesterday I was helping Aida with her interactions with Jolly. She's his second favorite, but lately their signals were getting crossed and I'd noticed where she was going wrong. So I gave her a few suggestions that smoothed things out between them. Perhaps a little too much. ROTFL!
For a few minutes all was well. Jolly stopped fussing with her because she'd adjusted her body language and was doing a better job of reading his. And then he flipped the script entirely! I guess once she'd stopped frustrating him, he noticed that she's quite the hottie. (Probably didn't help that she was wearing ekkie red, yesterday! Hahaha! Aida was less than impressed with that observation. Lol!)
The look on her face as he started happily (and intently) wagging that tail was priceless!
She of course immediately put him back on his tree stand to cool off. Funny thing is, she didn't mess up with hand placement. There was no back stroking, no under the wing action, no base of the tail touching. Nada! The mood just struck the little Romeo.
Weird thing? I'm his person. Not her. So it never occurred to either of us he might try that with her. Of course we were hoping for neither, but what can you do? This is the first sexual behavior we've seen from him. (He turns 3 in September.)
A contributing factor may have been the drop down in physical activity over the past few weeks. I've been recuperating from spinal surgery, and since I am the primary one who trains them and such, he hasn't been getting quite so many flight drills in as he usually does. Less physical exertion means that he had more energy to burn. And excess idle energy can lead to thoughts of a more... amorous nature.
So I explained to Jolly that, while I can certainly appreciate his taste in women, it was hardly appropriate for him to go... undulating about while perched on my wife's hand. Amusing perhaps, but definitely not appropriate. Hahaha!
But real talk for a moment, for those who may be reading this and have yet to deal with an amorously hormonal bird, please don't mistake the obvious humor I saw in this for me not taking what happened seriously. This kind of behavior shouldn't be encouraged, as it can lead to more aggressive behaviors as your obvious sexual incompatibility begins to hit home. Not to mention the possibility of jealous aggression and such. So what I suggest is to immediately defuse the situation by putting your bird down for a cool off period. A few minutes should do it, unless he/she is in full out hormonal overdrive. And then substitute in some high octane activity to get rid of that excess energy and take your bird's mind off of any less than appropriate pursuits.
And if this is a continuing issue, try cutting down on the more sugary and protein-rich foods in the diet, and being more strict with the lights out policy.
Anyhow, just thought I'd share. Mr. Jay is growing up!
