My wife has been giving me the side eye since yesterday afternoon! Why? Well, it might have something to do with how hard I was laughing over her... situation with a certain unexpected suitor.

Yep! Jolly's growing up. Sigh...

Yesterday I was helping Aida with her interactions with Jolly. She's his second favorite, but lately their signals were getting crossed and I'd noticed where she was going wrong. So I gave her a few suggestions that smoothed things out between them. Perhaps a little too much. ROTFL!

For a few minutes all was well. Jolly stopped fussing with her because she'd adjusted her body language and was doing a better job of reading his. And then he flipped the script entirely! I guess once she'd stopped frustrating him, he noticed that she's quite the hottie. (Probably didn't help that she was wearing ekkie red, yesterday! Hahaha! Aida was less than impressed with that observation. Lol!)

The look on her face as he started happily (and intently) wagging that tail was priceless!

She of course immediately put him back on his tree stand to cool off. Funny thing is, she didn't mess up with hand placement. There was no back stroking, no under the wing action, no base of the tail touching. Nada! The mood just struck the little Romeo.

Weird thing? I'm his person. Not her. So it never occurred to either of us he might try that with her. Of course we were hoping for neither, but what can you do? This is the first sexual behavior we've seen from him. (He turns 3 in September.)

A contributing factor may have been the drop down in physical activity over the past few weeks. I've been recuperating from spinal surgery, and since I am the primary one who trains them and such, he hasn't been getting quite so many flight drills in as he usually does. Less physical exertion means that he had more energy to burn. And excess idle energy can lead to thoughts of a more... amorous nature.

So I explained to Jolly that, while I can certainly appreciate his taste in women, it was hardly appropriate for him to go... undulating about while perched on my wife's hand. Amusing perhaps, but definitely not appropriate. Hahaha!

But real talk for a moment, for those who may be reading this and have yet to deal with an amorously hormonal bird, please don't mistake the obvious humor I saw in this for me not taking what happened seriously. This kind of behavior shouldn't be encouraged, as it can lead to more aggressive behaviors as your obvious sexual incompatibility begins to hit home. Not to mention the possibility of jealous aggression and such. So what I suggest is to immediately defuse the situation by putting your bird down for a cool off period. A few minutes should do it, unless he/she is in full out hormonal overdrive. And then substitute in some high octane activity to get rid of that excess energy and take your bird's mind off of any less than appropriate pursuits.

And if this is a continuing issue, try cutting down on the more sugary and protein-rich foods in the diet, and being more strict with the lights out policy.

Anyhow, just thought I'd share. Mr. Jay is growing up!

Jolly has great taste in beautiful women, just like his Dad! I can only imagine the look on Aida's face when Jolly started getting a little too happy with her.
Hopefully it is because of the less flying time he has been getting, and this will turn out to be a one time thing.
Sending you many healing wishes for a speedy, full recovery, Sweet Friend.

Jolly gettin down with the bow chica wa wow!

So Jolly got a little too Jolly did he LoL....nice that Aida was dressed appropriately for the occasion LoL :) I expect she felt very honoured indeed to be chosen in such a manner by such a handsome gent as Jolly hee hee :) No doubt you are right and its because hes not getting as much exercise as usual and hopefully it will all calm down when life gets back to normal and the usual flight exercises commence again. wishing you a bunch of well wishes for a swift recovery ...Get fully better soon Anansi :)

Best wishes from me, too!

Meanwhile... thanks for the charming and romantic little interlude! You have quite the libertine family unit there!

Yep, I definitely can't fault his taste! Hahaha! And yes, the look on her face was high comedy!

Yes, I hope it is indeed a one-time thing. I do find it funny that Maya was completely unfazed by the whole episode as she watched. She was probably just glad to see someone else getting all carried away for once. Lol!

And thank you for the healing wishes, sweetheart!

I laughed so hard upon reading this! Hilarious!

"Jolly got a little too Jolly"! Hahahaha! Nice! As for Aida being dressed appropriately, I couldn't help but notice she hasn't worn a trace of red since!

Thank you so much for the well wishes, Mary!!

Thank you, Gail!!!

And you are most welcome! I knew you all would appreciate the humor of the situation more than my poor wife did! Lol! You should see the face she puts on now whenever Jolly calls out to her from across the room, "Gimme kissssss! Gimme kissssss! Mmmmmm-waaaa!" Not so innocent anymore, apparently. :roll eyes:

Between Sir Jolly and Lady Maya, yes, I suppose there is something of a libertine atmosphere around here. You'd think they'd direct such lascivious impulses toward each other, instead. Lol!

How did I miss this? Mr. Jay all grown up and romancing the lovely Aida! I can imagine the look on Aida's face, I've had the same expression a few times when Poppy has recieved signals I had no idea I'd sent.

All laughter aside, thank you for sharing the proper protocol when dealing with an amorous parrot.

I hope you will be fully recovered and back to your regular training sessions very soon, Doc!

Yeah, all grown up indeed! I only wish I'd captured Aida's expression on camera. Hahaha! And you must've been even more alarmed the first time it happened with Poppy! That's a big girl!

Oh, yes. I did want to make sure anyone reading realized that, while we can appreciate the humor, the situation is potentially a serious one and appropriate steps must be taken without delay to head it off before it becomes an actual issue.

And thank you for the well wishes as well, Huckleberry!

Doc? Huckleberry? Is Wyatt Earp a love interest now, too????

Yep.. You now have a young man :). He was apparently not going to wait to see if you were going to get back to normal activity level again Steve... in his mind, if you're not available there is no time to waste, he had to go looking elsewhere and now LOL! That's great that he's becoming 'social' with Aida too, but there is a limit! :D.

Hahaha! Both Allee and I are huge fans of "Tombstone" in general and the character of Doc Holiday in particular... who was always looking for his Huckleberry. ;)

Oh no, you misunderstand my friend. I've always been his person, but the relationship has always been paternal. He's never made a move on me. Aida is his first crush. Lol!

Sorry Steve  I know you're his person, but I get what you're saying now... "strictly" paternal haha! I'm a little slooowww today ;)

Better you get the wrong idea than he does! Hahaha!

Hilarious story!

I wonder if there isn't something to the color Aida was wearing. I had a friend visit who love to dye her hair crazy colors, and she managed an almost perfect Alexandrine green. Our Alex, who normally scorns all guests, just HAD to land on her and purble and coo for the whole visit. She didn't make any advances on the "first date" but it's apparent that green is her favorite color.

Thank you!

I think it's entirely possible that the color she wore was a contributing factor. We often hear of the exact opposite scenario, where a bird loses his mind and goes totally aggressive when his person wears a color that he deems offensive. So if there are colors that they strongly dislike, isn't it just as likely that there are colors that they prefer?

Add to this the fact that fur, scale and feather coloring is often used to attract members of the opposite sex in nature, and your idea sounds not only feasible, but even plausible.
