Pidgey - Green Cheeked Conure and
Coming soon - Blue Fronted Amazon
Hi, my name's Kim - originally born in the UK now living in South Africa.
I'm a total animal nut, birds and dogs are my favourite.
Currently we have a english bulldog and a green cheeked conure - soon to be changing, my hubby told me today that he's booked my Xmas present, a blue fronted amazon!! I have wanted one for a number of years, but with no one home during the day we decided against it. I now have an accounting practice which I run from home which means we can finally get our BFA - I am ecstatic!!
My green cheeked conure is 9 years old now and every morning I lift his cage cover with trepidation - apparently their life span is 8 years, and although a year past his 'sell by date' he still looks and acts like a young bird.
We had an incident yesterday which scared the living daylights out of me - we have a cleaning service which comes every 2 weeks and for some reason known only to herself, the cleaner pegged open the cage door - of course the GCC flew straight out into the backyard and perched in a tree - as soon as we tried to get him down, he flew away and was nowhere to be found - 6 hours of absolute hell and the firing of the cleaning service later I heard him calling from the neighbors yard - poor thing was so exhausted from the day's activities that when we put a perch out for him he just dropped to the ground where we could pick him up.
My BFA is still in egg form lol!! My hubby works with a guy whose wife breeds them so I'm not sure how long it will be before they hatch and I don't quite know what the period will be before I can actually get my bird - they hand rear and she's as nutty as I am about animals - so I know that at least the little munchkin will get a good start.

I have been reading a number of other posts on this forum, and will more than likely bug y'all with questions. Glad I found this forum and I really look forward to interacting with everyone.

:green:<--- coming soon :)

Hello Kim and welcome to the forum:)

Congrats on your new Zon :)

GCC usually have a lifespan of anywhere between 15 and 30 years, so yours is still relatively young yet.

We would love to see some pics of Pidgey:)

Hey Antoinette - absolutely great to find another SAfrican here :) Thanks for the very warm welcome.
I can't begin to tell you how excited I am - I will probably only get my BFA in the new year, but so well worth the wait and you can bet on me posting pics like any new proud mom lol!!
Going to take some of the GCC in a little while - just waiting for him to dry off after his morning bath.
Cape Town is stunningly beautiful - used to come up to GP regularly for business and could never imagine living there though. I am going through to Melkbos tomorrow - will stop at the beach and take a few pics for you.

Hi Kim!
And a warm welcome here from the "even more lovely" Garden Route town George :)

You are very lucky to be so close to the best avian vet in SA Dr De Beer!

Good luck with the preparations for the new Buba!!

The Garden route is where I would love to live one day when I finally retire - preferably surrounded by loads of birds and a couple of bulldogs :)
Dr De Beer is literally just round the corner from us, my dad used to take his Greys there.
Thanks to you as well for the warm greeting.

Slightly off topic, I have just been offered a hand reared Amazon from a breeder in Klapmuts - he belongs to a project where prisoners from Porterville hand raise the babies - no force feeding but spoon fed and they literally spend every waking hour with the bird. This means getting a Zon sooner ... I am kinda torn now, do I wait for eggs to hatch or do I go for the quicker option?? Eish!!

Welcome to the forum KimH. I am new here as well. Congrts. on whichever Zon you get. Blue Fronts are beautiful birds.

I too am waiting for my dream bird from hatchings next year. Mine will be a green wing macaw. Mine though has not been laid yet, so I have a pretty long wait, but like you I feel it is well worth it.

Hi there and welcome to the forums! I love your babies. I lived with a bulldog for a good long time years ago but that is an entirely different story! I too have a green cheek conure, he's either 5 or 6, I can't remember and can't find his adoption certificate.

@ Wulfgeist - I'd love to hear a bulldog story or two one day, they are a rather interesting albeit strange breed :)

I don't blame you for not wanting to live in GP... it is a rat race...... probably one of the "fastest" cities in the world.

Now I am jealous, you are going to Melkbos, you know what to do when in the sea "P" for me hehe
