Beavis a Greenwinged Macaw
Beavis is a 7 year old greenwinged Macaw, I bought him little over 3 weeks ago. His previous owner passt away. The owners wife had him for 3 years but deicided to sell him because he just didn't like her and was agressive towards her. After a week of having him he finally let me touch him and after that I have no problem petting him and playing with him. Unfortunetly he wouldn't let me pick him up and he gets frightened and hides in the cage as soon as he sees a perch or anything that looks like one. Anybody know any tips to help me solve this problem? He deffimetly likes me and is very friendly with me, but I want to be able to pick him up and carry him around.
Also the lady who sold him to me said that he has a pretty good vocabulary and talks 100 words a minute, but in 3 weeks he haven't droped a word except something that sounds like "what". :red1:

Greenwing macaw

Do not put your hand or any type of perch into the cage. Open the door and step back and let the bird come out on his own. Many birds don't like people sticking their hands or perches into the cage. Just be patient. Good luck, I own a Greenwing and believe me they are super birds.

It's always wonderful when someone with the experience of owning the same parrot, thanks for chipping in, WillisT!

I absolutely agree with the above statement. Let him come out on his own until he realizes that he gets a say in what happens. Soon, you can begin further training (getting him to perch for you).

Good luck!

I never attempted to put a perch or my hand inside the cage. I do it only when he's out of the cage.

Hi Burzhuy, welcome to the forum....
Beavis needs time to settle down, get used to his new surroundings, family members etc.
Keep talking to him 24/7. In no time you will have fantastic results.
Follow the advise of the above members, great tips there.
Keep us updated
Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I have a solomon Island male that was said to be breeder. 10 years old. I am trying to get him use to being a pet. He does not like our hands either. I may try just letting him come out of the cage.

This is what i have been doing with remington, however this weekend i went to a bird show and was told that this is the wrong thing to do~ now i am very confused ~ I was told that the bird should be taken out by you and not on its own

I would get the book Parrots for Dummies.. as I am one.. I read and re read this book.

As in any type of training there are several good and bad ways.
What works for one will not necessary work on another bird..
Remember each bird is an individual just like you and I are.
I would give him time to adjust.
I did this with Abby and now there is no issue with her stepping up in or out of her cage. this has taken about 2 months. I open her top porch and she will set up there and watch everything.. If the porch is not open she will let me know she wants it open so she can be a part of the activity.

Just remember it takes time for them to get to know us as we get to know them. You want there love and companionship.. a good guardian is owned by the parrot not the guardian owning the parrot..
