Green Cheek veggie and fruit question

Straight pellets. I've never heard of a half and half. Pellets contain everything they need, whereas seeds do not.

I thought on average most people feed seed and pellets. I know there is a never ending debate of what you should feed your parrot :p But I was told by my breeder to give half seed and half pellets as well. (She is a well respected breeder and her own parrots are on that same diet and their healthy) But as I am reading more on the forum I am starting to limit my GCC's seed portions. She does eat the pellets way more than seed anyways thankfully.

Hey, for my GCC I make smoothies with all kinds of fruits and veggies so I hide them in there and she LOVES eating/drinking it. Easy way to incorporate medicine if I ever need to :) Maybe try that? This way I also can eat it with her too and be healthy.

So that sounded like a grand idea. Tico is a freak when it comes to trying anything new and is and always has been afraid of fruit except halved grapes.

I have a bag of frozen fruit mix so I put some of that in the blender and mushed it all up. Gave him a spoonful in a salsa dish on his playstand and some for Jasper in his playstand bowl. Jasper went for his after it warmed up a touch and wound up with a purple beak. After a little while later I see Tico in his as well. Yeah!

The excitement lasted only until I left this room and walked by his cage...oh man who murdered Barney?? Purple drops and globs *everywhere*..all over his playstand..the floor...my newly painted white wall...which it stained. I'm not sure if I could move him to the bedroom and try bleach on it? I sort of doubt it. I think if this is to continue he needs one of the wipable background things. :20:

Great to hear that they at least tried it. Roxy likes splatting it around too...they love doing it with new foods I hear. :p Sorry it caused such a mess for you! I give Roxy pretty small amounts one at a time, and she'll let me know when she's ready for more. So maybe try giving them smaller amounts so they can't flick it every where?

Oh yeah I forgot to mention..the lampshade too?? He was so funny..I stopped dead in my tracks and looked around..he got all puffed up and started strutting and whistling like he was so proud of himself!

It's ok, I'm not mad, I'm actually laughing about it, I should have known better.

Yes, I've heard half seed half pellet, then I've heard 80% pellet 20% seed. Sigh.

Yes, it is a never ending debate, but for the last decade, every Avian Vet I've come across has said Pellet needs to be the diet staple and seeds are given sparingly, not even a percentage of their feed. Foraging may account for some of the percentage you've been told, as foraging toys are fantastic for them and are usually filled with seeds, but for their diet staple, I've only heard 100% pellet. And that's including when I had Loki vetted when I brought him home in October.

Obviously, everyone is going to do what they think is best. For me and mine, that's a 100% pellet diet with fresh foods offered daily. Seeds are for treats, just like millet, at least in my house.

Well my little Skittles absolutely loves all food, but what I find was an easy way to get birds used to any fruit or veggie was to make it as small as possible and mix it with their seed or pellets, it seemed to really help them get a taste for it and start to realise it was yummy food.

Tango doesn't even eat the seeds. He only goes for sunflower seeds, nuts and some of the dried up pieces of whatever they are lol. Is that odd for your conure not to like seeds? I'm going to try and pellet diet

I just got 2 green cheek conure ! They are so cool ! They still like to bite , we are working on that ! I've Gave then carrots , strawberry ' s and oranges ! They really seem to like them ! It fun giving them new foods !

Advice I got from this forum was to put loads of veg that you want him to eat - I use green beans, kale, broccoli, sugar snaps and peas - into a food processor and chop fairly finely... I add a small few of his favourite berries to the chop... Jellybean loves it now and before I had huge difficulty in getting him to eat his greens...I am still.struggling to get him to eat pellets...
