Green Cheek Foot

Hello,

I am writing because my green cheek seems to have injured her foot.

She is only 2/12 months old, and currently weighs 63g.

My wife says the bird was on the top of the cage as she was opening it ( it's a top open cage, that has a perch that braces the doors open.) and as she bent down to get the perch to brace the doors open she heard it fall and make a loud noise and at the same time the bird flew across the room and landed on the couch.

On inspection the feet look symmetrical, the one that may be injured is bit orangish but that has been true for the past few days, I have attributed it to her feeding herself red peppers and strawberries with that foot.

She has been clearly trying to stay off that foot, tucking it away instantly when perched or still. At the same time she has also been climbing around and playing with a ball in her cage.

The vet's office is closed, I don't think this is an emergency as the bird seems very happy to climb around, eat, drink, and play. Also the bird doesn't seem to react negatively to touch with the foot in question.

We will take her to the vet in the morning if she still appears hurt, but was curious to hear if anyone has any experience with birds and injured feet.

I am hoping it is just a sprain, it has been an hour and a half since the incident.

Thanks,
-K

P.S. My current plan is to keep the lights low so that she will be still and off the foot. Only 2 hours until her bed time as of this post-script.

Awww
Ouchie foot!
I have no way to guess how the foot is, but I hope it's ok!
Keep us updated!

1) I also have an openable top cage and had similar failings....NEVER use the top as a play stand perch, only use it for changing toys and cleaning etc. The bird can climb on top from the front door. The tops are a deathtrap. There have been stories.

2) the bird will probably be alright, make have got a bruise under the dinosaur skin....but I'd see a vet anyways.

Called the vet first thing this morning. No Appointments until Wednesday.

She seems energetic and climbs everywhere, but with difficulty.

A bit more worried now because her foot appears swollen and she doesn't seem to be able to close the foot. Usually when perching the foot is retracted like a fist.

Vet said we could bring her in the morning to be boarded tomorrow and first opportunity that arises they'd look at her. Work makes this nearly impossible, but I'm going to try.

Really hope it is a sprain.

Ugh.

Vet was able to see the bird.

Soft tissue injury, pain med (NSAID) was prescribed, plus she has to be cage bound for 5-7 days.

Ultimately good news, however I feel really bad about no out of cage time.

If anyone has any tips for keeping my 2 1/2 conure from loosing its mind please feel free to share.

I’m glad she doesn’t have a serious injury! Does she have foraging toys or things she can pick apart to find little treats? Shredders occupy my conures pretty well for as long as they last. I’d try to find things that don’t involve her doing anything too energetic. Mine also like to watch birds on my tv or iPad. That’s all I can think of, besides visiting with her even though she needs to be contained :)

Thank you for loving her enough to take her to the vet,! Glad it not broken!
GCC love to untie knots! I read this tried it and found it to be true!
Plus easy to shred stuff like paperback books, and those shredders you can weave between bars. S cup full if plastic bottle tips. And a spray if millit, it s good treat and keeps them busy
