Gracie - CAG | Rookie - BRHP
Hi all.. I’m new to registering but I have been a diligent lurker in the forum for the past month since Gracie a beautiful CAG has come into my life along with a pretty big suitcase of baggage.

Without knowing it you guys have helped Gracie & me tremendously.. Which we thank you for :)

Her history is basically non-existent. No band or paperwork – has had 2 homes in the past year (I’m the 3rd) and is supposedly 2 – 2 ½ years old. No vet records since no one ever took her to see one (I suspect older).
The problems reported to me were – won’t say any words (was squirted or “shh’d” for too much “noise”), doesn’t step up, won’t come in or out of cage, aggressive (especially towards women). I was also told “hey you can change “her” name “he” doesn’t really know it”. Hates water even water in a dish & doesn’t drink much at all.

The last owner had her for 10 months and didn’t even have her in a bird cage (he had one dismantled in storage for her though that I could have) it was a rabbit cage without perches so it could be lifted on and off for access. Gracie got a new big cage that she loves.

Her diet was peanuts (lots and lots of peanuts), seeds and whatever was for dinner (including McDonalds). Her favorite treat I was told was Fritos corn chips.

I wasn’t told any of this until I went to pick up and the owner started to come clean on a lot of the problems mostly because she was acting up right there & he wasn't able to handle her. It didn’t matter.. No way was I leaving her there a minute more.

Gracie & I have pretty much corrected all of the problems with simple time, trust, encouragement and confidence. Gracie talks.. and talks and talks in a month she is up to at least 25 words and she did know her name that was her first words “Gracie is a gooood girl?”. I’ll be honest I chocked up because it wasn’t a statement it was definitely a hesitate question. I had read somewhere on the forum that it was best to let her keep her name especially since it was all she really had in her life – I’m glad I did. I would have loved her even if she never said a word.

Gracie is not aggressive.. 3 homes had it wrong. Gracie was weak from poor diet and bad muscles. I noticed right away she was very wobbly and scared she’d be dropped I imagine, she’d bite to try and hold on – I let her until she was trusting me not to drop her (she doesn’t steady with her beak anymore). Constantly telling her I got you it’s ok and “clucking” at her with “step up” and telling her “easy” when she used her beak and I have yet to get bitten in an aggressive manner.

I’m a woman sooo much for the “hates women” statement. Comes in and out of cage and Pak o Bird easily. Even says “C’mere and get me” when she wants to move.

Hates water.. That is true … or was true until today. I tried the shower again only this time I showered and let her stay in it towards the back dry area. I did the normal talking and this is fun and in less than 5 minutes she was under me and playing in the water on my feet.

We exercise a lot.. climbing, flapping and this week she learned to turn over and hang upside down from my hand without holding on with her beak so we are doing birdie pull ups to help the muscle toning that the vet said had atrophied. Gracie didn’t really know how to perch in her cage – that didn’t get better until the second week when she got a bit stronger – now she’s an Olympian!

Diet has been trickier to correct & is still a work in progress. Gracie weighed only 297 grams when I got her. She also seems to have a bit of OCD when it comes to food & rejects most everything – by tossing it to the dog lol I am now familiar and have probably every veggie there is and keep going thru them over and over trying everything, different shapes etc. I have resorted to blending up leafy dark greens, pellets with a bit of organic juice and soaking the veggies that she will eat (carrots, peas and lima beans) which has worked. I have tried and retried a bunch of pellets all rejected. Constantly add new veggies to try. She is up to 421 grams.

So that was the good part.. Now for the bad. As I mentioned I did take Gracie to an avian vet I wanted a full work up.. whatever the doctor wanted to run & I thought as a baseline in case we needed it for any problems down the road. The doctor spent over 2 ½ hours examining Gracie and making her comfy with everything they did. She was upfront and based on Gracie’s past diet (fatty & unhealthy), poor muscle tone & inability to exercise even in a cage, lack of any sunlight & high urine output she is concerned that Gracie has liver and kidney disease/damage. I’ve been mulling this over for the past week waiting for the test results. The only thing I’ve gotten back was fecal is negative, no infections & Gracie is indeed a girl. Which the doctor was hoping she was a boy

Any advice on what I can do diet wise to help her or whats best to support the liver and kidneys? The vet says I’m doing everything I can and the usual things they’d say to change I'm already doing but I feel like i should be doing something .. anything. So what now and what does this mean for Gracie’s future?

I’m really sorry this is so long. I think I needed to tell her story and get it out of me to folks that have been there, done that and probably wrote the book. I really appreciate the outlet :)

ANY and ALL advice is very much appreciated.

I can't offer any advice, but I do want to say thank you for saving Gracie's life and for sharing your story. I somehow just know it's going to have a happy ending for both of you.

That's sweet thanks.. but honestly without all of the information everybody here had already complied & shared with the world I would not have known half of what I did to even do her any good.

I'm lucky that I work in an office where she's able to come with me & the boss fell for her cuteness (she wolf whistles at him constantly - smart girl) my office has literately turned into Gracie's playland lol. We've been together constantly for the past month & it's amazing how quickly she peeked her way into my heart. I really hope you are right .. not gonna lie the doc has me scared for her.

Hates water probably applies to 75% of all the CAGS out there, including mine!

Hates women = I haven't really interacted with one yet. So I keep them at bay until I am sure I can trust them...

The Fritos diet! Now that's nutrition... what were these people thinking?! Wash it down with a beer. Beer and Fritos... it's her favorite meal! :32:

My CAG is a monster, so 425 grams even seems light. Tusk is around 550, but he's HUGE for a CAG. My CAG is a fairly picky eater as well. You just keep putting healthy foods in front of him... cut up the stuff you want him to eat, and then stuff it inside cooked shell pasta. That usually works.

Aloe detox, mixed with fruit juice 50/50 usually does wonders to get those liver values down.

Thank you! I know the items he was rambling off about her treats is really bad. Pretzels and Frito's ugh. I did try and trick her by mashing up veggies, baking them in like Frito shapes (not actually Fritos of course) lol didn't fall for it. This girl is soo picky she doesn't even like sweet potato's. After a month she ate her first carrot yesterday (apparently it must be overcooked in a small cube shape).

You're so right she is still underweight for her size but is moving up bit by bit daily. The vet said she had no muscle left that it was even gone from her pelvic area so she has a long way to go. I can still feel her keel bone but it is getting less pronounced. Apparently the only place she's fat is her liver :(

I can't get her interested in pasta but i didn't try stuffing it ... she does love to forage make she'll scoop them out. Great idea thanks... same with the Aloe Detox much appreciated!

I know you are going thru a hard time right now I am sure praying for you and your girl. Thanks for taking the time to help us out.

Welcome to the forums! Thank you for Gracie's beautiful introduction and her very special story. I am so glad she found you, sounds like the timing was impeccable for the poor girl.

Her weight was so low, my guess is, a healthy diet is going to make a tremendous difference in her overall condition. It sounds like she was suffering from long term starvation when she met you. As Mark/Birdman mentioned, keep offering foods prepared in different ways, steamed, baked, raw, mashed, shredded, chopped. It sounds like you are doing everything right, time and patience is the key. I bet before too long, Gracie will be impatiently waiting for the next meal to be served.

Taking Gracie for what was probably her first vet visit ever for a thorough exam and full blood work up was a wonderful gift, bless you for taking such good care of her.

Best wishes to you and your girl. Please continue to share Gracie's journey.

Ohhh she waits for her next meal alright so she has new stuff to throw around lol. Seriously this girl is such an odd eater - she doesn't actually swallow food so much as stick her tongue inside the pieces and suck on them (thats why i started soaking them all in a veggie puree). It's hard to explain how she eats. No worries tho I won't give up

My lovely girl has hubby thinking I've gone completely insane... a vet visit and full lab work is probably the only sane thing he thinks I've done. Everybody has been banned from any fast food or chips of any kind in the house (she recognizes the bags and chirps like a baby for them - too cruel). There are so many veggies I put in a mini-fridge for her foods & turned the family into vegetarians (someone hasta eat what she doesn't that week lol). I threw out all of his favorite cookware and replaced everything with cast iron and stainless (he is still mourning the loss).
Then this morning he caught me in the shower with Gracie...
You can imagine the comments I got after that :)

I swear I am always chopping, mashing. baking etc. (she has rejected 7 different birdie breads lol) I have never eaten so many veggies in my life (apparently this is the only way she accepts i'm not poisoning her) she was right about the birdie breads -yuck lol

Thanks for the well wishes & support :)

Have you tried a bird bread and sneaking veg in there? My CAG (and every bird I currently have) loved that "treat"...

I have a crazy idea and not sure how well it would work. Get a few McDonald's bags and containers for chicken nuggets and burger wrappers.

Wrap and box fruit and veggies in the McDonald's packaging and let her forage through them. Drizzle some coconut oil on her veggies (my birds go ape$&@! for anything with a tiny amount of coconut oil on it) and she very well may like it.

It's just a thought and may work by showing her "this is food and this is what we eat!"

Dandelion Greens are huge when it comes to liver and kidney support. You can pick them fresh or if you're lucky find them in a grocery store. Next step will be deciding how to sneak them in :20:

Great Idea. I have to do that with BB . He will not eat sweet potatoes lol I also slip some Kale in

You can also do what a lot of moms do and purée the vegetables and use instead of water in bird bread, just in case she hates the texture of the veggies.

Awesome ideas I will definitely give it a go. I haven't tried the coconut oil either will see if that entices her. Thanks much!

I have tried so many birdie bread recipes I think I have the only CAG that doesn't like any versions (yet) she may be waiting for me to serve it at high noon on the 3rd Friday of the month, during a full moon on a leap year lol She rejects, rejects, rejects then all of a sudden acceptance.

I've been slipping the kale & sweet potatoes and a few other veggies into juice and mixing her carrots, peas, corn etc. with it (along with various beans, lentils, quinoa etc.)

I neglected to inform my teens that what was in the fridge was "birdie" bread - they got home one day .. mmm cornbread lol I was told "don't much care for the new recipe mom"

Will keep trying different versions tho :)

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for saving Gracie's life. While the remaining lab results will help direct your future care, you are definitely on the right track. Lots of great advice given; rather than aimlessly repeat, it can be helpful to eat whatever you are giving her as it is offered. Parrots are flock creatures - though Greys can be more independent - but YOU are a part of her "flock." My TAG is keenly perceptive and I can intuitively note when he is in a "watchful" mode. I've gotten E.T. to try something by watching me eat, (separate piece for germ avoidance) while I bob my head up/down and say "Mmmmmm!" It definitely brings out the inner child!!

This also made me think about cutting different items into "fries" shapes she could hold in one claw and eat like she would a french fry. Maybe sweet potato fries, carrot fries, zucchini fries, celery fries? You could go as far as serving them in an actual french fry carton - the real french fry smell might go a long way toward enticing her to try what's in it.

What a great idea! I love that, we shall have veggie "fries" for dinner (kids will be so thrilled lol). I'm sure she'll eventually adjust. In just a month she has overcome every hurdle of her past issues 1 by 1 she's really is an amazing resilient & smart girl.

I really didn't think the water issue would ever be ok with her EVER considering she was so harassed by a spray bottle that she wouldn't even drink out of her water dish. Usually I let her watch from the curtain rod when I shower then on Saturday I put her at the dry end of the tub while I showered & acted like a fool talking about having fun..fun.. fun.. she joined in after about 5 minutes climbing on my feet and flapping around trying to catch the drops of water.

Then yesterday she climbed into her cage and was staring at her water dish for a few minutes then dipped her left foot in very slowly, then her right foot, , then her beak/face splashed in the bowl then did a climb up to the top hang upside down & flip, attacked her toy & right back to the water bowl to repeat again and again this went on for at least an hour (would have recorded it but I didn't want to disturb her break thru) she was so fluffed up she looked like a giant powder puff lol. She kept yelling out and saying fun, fun, fun and pretty girl Gracie while she played. This morning she's been watching the wild birdies outside in the puddles & repeating "Look at you fun, fun, fun" out the window (we are at work and not getting a thing accomplished)

She still hates towels but that's a monster she can battle another day lol

Thanks for all of the great ideas!

Thanks Scott! You are so right. She is very watchful & quick to pick up what I'm doing & repeat it. I wouldn't recommend trying any parrot pellets I tried to "show" her they were yummy - umm they aren't lol she's right.
