Kiwi has been preening hubbies face recently. Apparently, he is very gentle! Not sure I'd want that nut cracking hook on my face:11:

Gotta hand it to my husband, he has nerves of steel and completely trusts this bird. Not sure I would let Kiwi that close to my eye

Kiwi has actually been pretty friendly lately (unusually friendly). Even I have been able to give him the extra hug and kiss on his head and back:11: Nothing hormonal or anything, we were done with that a few weeks ago. I think the more time goes by, the more he's FINALLY coming around to be the sweet bird I always knew must be down there somewhere. From vicious attack bird on day one to preening his preferred humans face gently- close to 7.5 years. To anyone struggling with a new bird, they really do have to come around in their own time, but they eventually will.

That's such great encouragement to people struggling with their birds and getting discouraged out there. It lets people know that sometimes it doesn't take weeks or months, it can take years... but that any creature responds to love in their own way at their own pace .

Adorable pics of Kiwi and the one from Chris-md too....it will be a long long time before I'd entrust my eyes or my nose to Mr Biggles if indeed ever but with a way smaller and less frightenening beak my quaker PeterPan often grooms my face...a word to the wise to anyone wearing earrings or studs dont let your parrot groom anywhere near them as they will be removed sometimes painfully during the grooming process ouch

I wonder what they must think of our faces? We have something beak like, but it is fleshy and soft and we can't put food in our noses and our mouth is like nothing they have.

Poor Plum got a real shock when he chomped hubby's nose a few months ago, he was as shocked as hubby that he had bit him and to find it wasn't really a beak. He shot right over the other side of his cage and took ages to come over to us.

He has never done it again since. Honestly think he thought it should be hard too.

Hubby even had the wound recognised at work by a bird lover ha ha

He does! I call it honking. Whenever he squeezes my nose I let out a loud HONK. He loves it!

I showed Husband your pics and he freaked, lol. " That man has nerves of steel!" Buddy will preen my face. Venus will preen but she will also lay her beak against my cheek, nose, ears, but I have to watch her because she will get food ready to "give" to me. She's only succeeded in feeding my ear though and one time only, lol!

Oh that is too funny he got scared AFTER he chomped it and discovered it was a soft nose and not a hard beak. Poor Plum expected a real beak Hope your hubbies nose healed up well.

Great pics! Allowing a parrot to preen sensitive areas is a sign of great trust. Several of mine have such privileges; they can distinguish between the face and hands/other extremities.

I wear glasses and Kiwi freaks out (straight into "killer" mode) when I take them off, so I kind of have a barrier to that kind of preening anyways. He will preen my hair and nibble my ears, which is what I feel comfortable with. He is starting to be more tolerant of hugs from me though and that is more special to me than facial preening. I just love touching him, he's so soft!
