Good or Bad idea?

They aren't "good" owners sadly, they are selling her because they want the money, they wanted $1200 for her at first and now are asking $800-$900.

I had enough for her but would only have about $400 left over and I wouldn't have been able to afford a vet trip right away.

I just reread the thread. It isn't clear to me why you think the current owners are not good for the bird. Is it because the bird plucks or is it because they want to sell the bird instead of giving it away?

The owners aren't good because they don't seem to care about her well being. They smoke with her around and most of the time her cage is pretty disgusting. They treat her like she's something to make a quick buck off of.

they were also given the bird(for free)because the owner before them thought she would get a good loving home. They're only defense for trying to get as much for her as they can was "she's worth a lot more". Not because they want to make sure she goes to someone that actually wants her.

I almost guarantee that she's plucking because they're smoking!! I sort of want to take it back and tell you to get her anyway. She's obviously not going to get vet care with them, they obviously don't care about her well being.

Some birds are better off being taken out of a situation if you have a better place for her. Veterinary bills are a consideration to be sure, however clearly she is not getting the proper care there. If I always waited for the perfect time, I wouldn't have rescued most of my animals. I have found ways to make it work, from small jobs, to couponing. This may not be ideal to most people, however all my animals get all the care they need and a great home to boot. Sometimes when your passionate you can make impossible things happen.

I'm still keeping tabs on her, ugh I just don't know

I totally understand, My BandG was an accident. I should never surf adoption sites. It was love at first sight. I usually foster for Phoenix landing, and I saw a bird on another rescue's site, I couldn't help myself, I called, then interviewed, and drove 4+ hours to meet her. They were not a dedicated bird rescue and only took her because where she was was worse. They really didn't have the resources or knowledge to care for her properly, her cage was too small, and her diet was adequate, but far from great. They meant well, but just didn't know what to do with her. We are thrilled to have her and I am glad that I was able to provide what they could not. Some things are just meant to be.

This is honestly the toughest decision for me, I feel that because I'm aware of her poor life that I should be the one to save her. I'm going to have to think on it more and talk to my family too.

My biggest worry is still the chance that she could be really sick, and I won't have the money to take her to the vet right away

Honey , she can get sick a week after you get her , you just never know.
But if you can get your family to agree to help with vet bills , that is the only thing stopping you , right ?

I read the other posts and I agree that if you are getting this bird out of a bad situation where it's not going to get any health care at all , no matter what,
maybe it's not such a bad idea to go ahead and get him......
I would at least talk to your avian vet and see what his/her fees are and maybe you do have enough for what they would want to run.
Or , they could possibly let you pay the balance off weekly or whatever.
This would be a great help and in the meantime , you will have to find a job to help pay and save for his care and yourself of course :)

You poor thing !! Such a tough position to be in :(

I'm going to talk to my family more and see, I would pay them back if they would be willing to help.

I'll keep everyone updated on my decision

Good luck, its heartbreaking to see anyone suffer, I have all of my funds going to the FL bird rescue effort at the moment. I am confident that we will find a way to make it work, as I am sure that if it was meant to be, you will too. Try to take a deep breath though, the decision doesn't have to be made tonight, sleep on it and things may seem clearer in the morning. Off to bed for me anyway.

I love what you all are doing for those birds, if things don't work with this bird I will see what I can donate.

So I have thought this through over and over again, and I won't be taking this macaw. The possibility of this bird having a serious disease is to big of a risk. I wouldn't be able to properly quarantine her from my current bird(still being in the same air space). So if she had something there's a good chance that she would make Jewels sick as well. It than would leave me with two sick birds that I wouldn't be able to help. I'll with one knowing that I can take good care of her, and look forward to helping a bird in the future.

thanks to everyone who responded, I'm so glad that I joined this forum and I look forward to introducing my future macaw to you all

Good thinking honey. I know you will be a great macaw momma when the time comes.
You put Jewels first and that is the right thing to do.
Can't wait to see pictures of your macaw whenever you do get one :)

It wouldn't be fair to put her second, i'll just have to spoil her more lol

Sounds like to very responsible decision. Have you considered offering to help the current owner by coming in and cleaning the cage? Maybe they'd start feeling guilty and would take your advice to get the bird checked out.

And who knows. Maybe they'd change their mind about charging so much for her.

At any rate, at least the bird would have a better environment.

I would but they live to far to walk and I don't have a car, they now have offers for her so hopefully she finds a good home
