Getting my first macaw

I don't want to hijack the joy of Nalu's announcements but I just wanted to let Abigal know I had an Illiger's macaw named Diego. I loved him very much. He was co-parented so he had this wild side that I just loved. Illiger's macaw are very beautiful. Diego was much more of a handful than my Noble macaw Mihijo.

I am looking forward to physcocircus's journey with the baby Nalu. I want to learn differences and similarities of the Hahn's with the Noble macaw. Pictures are always welcome and look forward to watching her grow!

no problem at all, by all means. I love hearing about others' macaws. I would have considered any mini macaw, but the hahns was the first one I found out about, and the price was appealing as well.

I talked to Kathy and she seems real nice. She doesn't have anything right now but told me to check back with her in a few weeks.

Thanks for the input noblemacaw. I am assuming since it is my first macaw I should probably get a hahns macaw and not buy a illiger's macaw?

My illiger's Diego had a strong personality. He was very intelligent and learned quickly simple tricks I taught him. He spoke quite well and for what ever reason learned to talk from Lupe more than me. Diego was bonded to me to the exclusion to other people. I would not of considered Diego nippy but he would grab with his hard black beak and drum with his tongue. Diego was co-parented and it took about 3 weeks after I brought him home for him to decide he liked me.

With my personal experience with my Illiger's macaw I can say they are not as laid back as a Noble macaw. I don't know many parrots that are as laid back and forgiving as the Noble macaw. With my experience I consider the Hahn's macaw to be a bit nipper than a Noble but to me being nippy has to do with a more stronger personality. They use the beak to try to discipline you into behaving in their narcissistic ways. LOL I do not consider mini macaws to be biters at all. The only mini macaw I do not have experience with is a Severe and if I am to go by what I have read and have been told by Severe owners they can be a bit difficult to get a long with. Diego's breeder told me "They are called Severe macaws for a reason." She had one that only her husband could handle and she handled large macaws daily.

If a mini macaw is your first step up from a smaller parrot you cannot go wrong with a Hahn's. I know you cannot go wrong with a Noble macaw. If you are use to handling all kinds of parrots and can practice nurturing dominance then any other mini macaw are awesome companions. They will keep you on your toes but that is what I love about mini macaws. They enrich my life.

I do understand to own parrots one will get bit/nipped. It is part of having parrots in your life. My noble macaw NEVER ever drew blood. He didn't even nip. The only time I would even considered a nip is when I had favorite food on my finger and he was too excited to take it gently and would grab my finger tip with pressure. The only time I ever bled from Diego was when he had my finger in his beak and he lost balance and the side of his beak was sharp enough to cut me.

I have been bruised by beak pressure by every parrot but Mihijo. Mihijo never had it in him to apply any kind of pressure with his beak. I use to have to crack his nuts in shell for him so that he could get at the nut meat. It will be very interesting to assess personality between Sir John/Julio and Mihijo after we get him up here and after the adjustment period.

The Illiger's macaw is about 100 grams bigger than a Hahn's macaw. Other than the size difference I don't see much difference in personality. Illiger's can be a very affectionate and loving companion but like all parrots can be narcissistic as well. Picking your next parrot companion is such a personal decision but I totally understand wanting to learn about them and try to assess if they are the kind of parrot you want to live with.

Strictly speaking from reading, not experience of course, the illiger's wouldn't be much tougher than a Hahn's.

If you wind up contacting her again, let her know Don recommended her lol.

Thanks for the reply. I am not worried about being bitten at worse I might need a stitch. I have been bitten once by my current conure when I first got her. That said what I have been reading makes me wonder if an illegars macaw would not do well being the ony macaw. Though I do not want my green cheek conure or dog to interract with it I have to wonder if it would try to nip at either one if given a chance. These are two reasons why I would never get a large macaw. I usualy work 6pm to 6am but sometimes 2pm to 10pm (not that often). Or once in a while I go to the town 30 minutes away and run some errands but come back later that day. Right now I am leaning towards the Hahns Macaw.

My hahns macaw was extremely nippy as are all macaws IMO, they all love to test the waters, my current mini a ycm named koko is nippy nippy nippy all the time very beaky bird. I was years ago when I got into rescue looking into adopting a severe macaw(it ended up passing away due to underlying health issues out of anyone's control:(). Severes are great and IMO my favorite mini they are so loving and very playful, but they are a handful more so then a ycm or illegers or noble, hahns and severes are the more colorful of the mini in my expirence. Which is weird because one is the smallest mini macaw and one is the largest mini macaw and everything in between seems rather calmer.

No matter if it is mini it is still a macaw and still has the same temperament.

If I was to pick a favorite mini macaw it would be the Noble macaw. I love the personality and temperament of them. My next favorite would be the Illiger's because I really loved Diego very much and he was really my bird. I can say things I didn't really like about Diego but because of my love I overlooked the "negatives" so to speak. Lupe has said Diego could do no wrong and I looked at him with rose colored glasses on. She would affectionatly call him "a little asshole" With affection? Yep, as weird as that sounds.

Mihijo was really the perfect parrot. Unfortunately he also ended up becoming a plucker despite being taken care of very well and being happy and healthy. Once he became a plucker people responded to him differently and he could feel that. Eventually I quit taking him out in public because of the way people would treat him. It use to hurt me when people would reject him because he was plucked. Mihijo never understood why people were repulsed by him. He loved people and loved to socialize.

It will be interesting to experience Sir John/Julio after he comes home and settles in. The rescue considers him a "sweet parrot" and they believe that if he was not plucked he would of been adopted by now. I do not expect to have the same kind of relationship I had with Mihijo but I am very excited to have another Noble macaw in the house. I am very determined to get Julio comfortable, healthy and happy enough to perform the Noble macaw opera singing they are known to do. This time I will get that on video.

For me personally I love all mini macaws. I am a macaw person and the mini's are more manageable because of the size. The large macaws are awesome but for me are too big for me. Valentino is almost too heavy when he snuggles up against my head when perched on my shoulder. (Yea, I don't like parrots up on my shoulder and I don't keep him there very long just when he is in my office and I am finishing up because Lupe had RELEASED THE KRACKEN!)

Noble I love the stories of your toy, actually right now I am sitting with my ycm and she is dancing and singing, they are a joy to have around and minis a great!

People need to get over plucked birds I have multiple and they are great, just because they have come from a bad situation and are plucked is no reason to reject them... I take baby girl out and people look at her in such a horrible way and I just don't care because I love her dearly.

Noble you think a red fronted is big0.0, the hyacinth that is willed to me is very very large compared to that and she snuggles into my chest and on my shoulder as does the emerald macaw:p.

Yep. The RFM is more than enough parrot for me. I can't handle how big the body is not even dealing with flight and tail feathers of the large macaws. When I hold a Hy I have to be sitting down and put him in my lap. To have him perched on my arm the weight is too heavy and will aggravate my neck injury. When I sit with the Hy he lays in my lay and nuzzles me with his head. I love them but the RFM is the biggest I would go for me to fully enjoy what the birds do.

Thank you, I appreciate it.

Nalu is a Hawaiian slang term for wave. Macaws remind me of the tropics and pirates. It is a gender neutral name since I don't know the sex; plus I just liked the way it sounded haha.

Thanks again.

I cant take it Psychocircus !!!! :) I might have to have one LOL :) (we must be on the same schedule I got pictures of my RB2 today ,I think Im 6 weeks also.
