The breeder is going to send me a baby Timneh in about 2 weeks, weather permitting!

Should I keep toys to a minimum at first? What kind of toys would you all recommend? Also, should I only use low perches until he/she is familiar with the cage? This will be a newly weaned baby, about 4 months old. DNA sexing is pending and I'll have pictures tomorrow.

If you want to know the back story, here is a link to a previous thread. It will explain why I am nervous. Thanks!

Congrats on getting your new Baby :)

You dont really need to put the perches down low... Several types of perches that are different sizes are best... They all love Swings... A bell on a chain is always a favourite with them:) Different types of rope toys are good and a bowl with various foot toys always keeps them amused... Most of our Birds love Wooden Toys that they can chew, but I know after your last tragic experience you will be wary of these!

Thanks, I think what happened was a terrible fluke. I would like to know what people normally do for young greys. I know they are clumsy at first.

Cosmo's favorite thing to do is play with foot toys. So I had some sea grass baskets that I zip tied to his cage (inside the cage and outside) then I fill it with foot toys . He will sit there for ever going through that basket. A good chew toy he likes that would be a good alternative to wood is cork. I buy new unused wine bottle corks (real cork not the waxy kind), they really keep him busy : ) I get mine from a wine supplier online. you can get 100 corks for about $16.00

Congrats on your new baby. I am very sorry for the backstory, how tragic, yet it was due to no fault of yours! This is a joyous occasion and I am very happy your getting a new grey.

Congrats. Glad you went a head with getting another. I'm I'm love with rope perches. They are great grip for young birds and the perches that bolt to the side of the cage. Means you can have perches where you need them with out over loading the cage. Have fun with your new friend we will all need photos when he arrives

Congrats on the new grey, make sure you post pics when you get him.

I agree on the bowl of foot toys, I don't know where my twins would be without theirs. But by far their favorite toy is a leather string I hung from the cage, it's the simplest toy ever but they love it. I'd say just get a variety of toys and keep switching them around until you find ones he likes.

A baby grey who is allowed to develop flying skills benefits from it for the rest of the birds life. So best not to clip wings at too early an age. This will help with the birds self confidence. Baby greys need about 3 weeks to adjust to their new home and person. During these three weeks trust building is vital so be gentle, kind, loving and positive as I am sure you will be. Then comes the gradual socialization to other people and places and things in your home. This is a good time for the gentle introduction to toys. Also begin teaching the step us and down. Playing peek-a-boo is good too so they will get used to a towel in their life. Gentle touching should start early so they know you will not hurt him or her. I say the word touch to Rosie and then she knows I am going to touch her.

Adolescence is another story for the near future. Most of all have fun.

Awe, He / she is adorable ! I'm so happy for you , I know you must be so excited : )

Oh he is so cute that face make you melt.

The bird looks to be over 6 months because the beak has the adult color. He looks super healthy. How old is he??

Supposedly 16 weeks. My breeder got him from another breeder for me. He doesn't have anymore Timneh babies right now and he wanted to send me another bird because he felt so bad that I lost the one he sent. I wondered about the beak. He looks big too. The eyes are still dark so he must be fairly young. The age doesn't matter to me. My breeder said he is friendly to everyone, steps up easily to anyone that gives him the chance, even to his 7 year old son. Oh, and he said that he is talking a little too. He says "watcha doin?" and mumbles a lot so he will probably be quite the talker. My breeder is going to keep him a couple of weeks to make sure he is healthy and send him then if the weather will cool a little. Thanks for asking.
