Parrots
Kiwi : Indian Ringneck Parrot RIP, taken far too young, Mango : Lovebird, 5 years old 2014, Sprite : Pineapple green cheek, <1 2014
They are rescues. A white & blue, 1 year, never handled. I'm so excited!
I do have a few Qs
Our parrot is sick, & currently being housed in the bathroom. Is it ok if they are housed in the dining room? It's separated by a hall way & a door.
What is 'quarrantine' exactly? Not breathing the same air, or just not letting them touch, not using the same material / washing hands, or completely changing clothing & such?
I will talk to the vet how long our parrot is contagious & if I should be worried. I know, not the best time to introduce new birds, but their free, come with cage & food, & need a new home, fast. Yay.
Will update when we get them, we should (hopefully) get them tomorrow afternoon.
:blue2: :whiteblue:

The proper way to quarantine is in separate buildings with a separate air system. Not using same material, washing hands, change of clothing, etc etc. And like you said, it just depends if your parrot is contagious. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have the parakeets checked before bringing them home. Cause if they carry anything, it would be the worst time to have them around if anything they carry is airborne it would make you parrot sick very quickly since his immune system is already down from being sick. He would be more susceptible at this moment.

Ok, I can then have them in separate rooms. 2 doors & a shorter hallway between them. I don't have any way to have 2 separate air systems. However I can stuff a towel under the gap between the carpet & the floor.
How long does quarrantine last? 30 days? 45? I know, the longer the better...
Hopefully once the quarrantine is over, ill be able to put both of them together.
I could always ask my sister if she can clean her closet & put them in there. She wants her own parrot, & hopefully 1 or both of these new guys will be her lovey doves. I've been a bit protective of Kiwi - I want her to bond with me, so I guess I've been a bit protective. But these guys will be her love doves, hopefully.
Before they come home, ill clean the whole bathroom, pick up either my room or my sisters, & clean out kiwis old cage so that they can't get sick from it, & make sure I completely clean my hands & change my cloths between handling.

Ill do everything within my powers to make sure Kiwi isn't hit with another illness, & that these budgies don't end up with any sicknesses themselves! I'm going to just go with a long quarrantine, cant afford the vet. If they look ok, then just a long quarrantine.
Thank you Mikey, I know, a bad time, but it was a good opportunity. If I thought I could put it off at all, I would. But they need them gone ASAP, and I want to rescue them.
:)

At least 30 days is preferred, longer is better of course. Just always remember, sanitizing is the key! :)

It will help if you get a box of rubber gloves when you have to do stuff back & forth with them, hands get so raw from all that washing. Congratulations on your budgies! You're going to love them :)

Lordy I'm glad I got them! They cost $40, but the lady had 4 dogs, a screaming sun conure, in a tiny house, where it reeked of just musk & smoke. Their cage clearly hadnt been cleaned for months, looked like they went through a full moult and it was never cleaned, and they are absolutely obese!
Pics soon

Here's some pics of the girls & how filthy their cage was :(
I think it's 2 girls, whatcha think? They're pretty!

They are adorable. If possible, a cage size upgrade eventually would do them wonders. And getting them some nice new toys/natural wooden branch perches will be good for them (and fun shopping for the owner :) )

Here's their cage. It looks plenty big, but I would love to go on a toy shopping spree :3

Isn't that a shame these things happen? I've seen those type of conditions so many times. Congratulations on getting them out of that terrible situation. I'd take that cage and soak it in chlorohexidine solution (Nolvasan) for a week. But honestly, if I received birds in a cage like that I would toss it. The bacteria and mite infestation would make the cage a possible vector of unwanted problems and keeping it around is just not worth it.

It does seem pretty nasty :( though we'd be buying kiwi a new cage before them. BUT... If we bought kiwi a cage, they could have kiwis old cage. It's a bit small, and not tall but wide, though I think it'd be an improvement... :)

Yes, I'm very glad. Perhaps once the quarantine is over, I may have to get 2 boys for them. I'd love to breed budgies, though I'd like to get them in shape (they're fat, I think some more free flight, once the blue one can fly properly, and attention will get them into shape). It looks like they may be a bonded female pair, I can't tell if their preening each others faces or kissing. Those issues will come later, if I choose to breed them. They're not even close to tame, as said before.
I'm just glad their small - I know the bigger the cage the better, but they'd fare better in a small cage longer then Kiwi would. They're cages only cost like $50, just need to convince my sister to go shopping for toys, and suddenly see a good cage... ;)

Currently our water isn't working - Kiwi has been positively tested for coccidiosis, so I'm assuming a water / vinegar + a diluted bleach cleaning would be required? Ugh, I wish our water worked.
How long do you think it should soak? Hour? 2 hours? All day? This would be in the bleach solution. Also, Kiwi has a little 'hide hut' that she never uses, so I'd like to give it to the budgies, would the washer be sufficient? Or should it also go through the bleach wash? It's yellow, & I don't mind it becoming white or paler yellow, but It'd probably be easier to just throw it in the wash.
Thanks :D they're very cute! Any ideas on names? And do you think they also look like 2 girls?

Folk eye - that looks awesome. I'd like to get more budgies though - kinda like potato chips, can't have 1, can't have 2, have to at least have a handful. So I'd be looking into getting something larger then that, I would like at least 4 budgies. A small variety. So ill see what the local petco has, if I go to my moms work after school every day, I can make $75 a week :) her boss pays me to clean and such.

Ok so my gramma emailed me asking what I want for Christmas - I can ask her for cages, toys, perches, you name it!! :D
So... Whatcha think of this cage? Good enough for several budgies (any ideas how many) or for kiwi (IRN)?
Prevue Hendryx Large Black Flight Bird Cage - Outdoor Aviary Cages and Parakeet Flight Cages from petco.com

Will be looking at various toys & perches as well.

That looks like a good cage for a few budgies :)

Might be the same as this one, Bird Cages & Aviaries: Prevue Wrought Iron Flight Cage F040 w/ Stand which has customer reviews on both sizes. Reviews are pretty positive :)

That cage also looks pretty cool. Looks to be the same cage, or same style at least. Hey, I could breed indian ringnecks! Hehe.

We went to the pound today, and there was an adorable cockatiel named Charlie. He kept trying to bite, lol. We also filled out a fostering form, so maybe we'll get to foster some parrots, cats or dogs in the near future. Or livestock! Hehe.

Also, any ideas how to get them more tamed? Should I do stick training?

I honestly don't know about the taming, I'm guilty of not stick training or the step up routine.

Me too.... *hide*

OMG it looks like their cage haven't been cleaned in weeks. And yes they both look like girls to me. Glad you have them now.

I know, there was at least 1" of crap :( but now they're in a better cage, and have LOTS of toys. In fact, I added a HUGE one today! Hehe.

I'm happy for you, hope your budgies are happy with you! :) also, I recommend cleaning their cage often. And get them to a vet for a checkup (mentioning this if you haven't did this yet, but I recommend you do) also the budgie on the left looks EXACTLY like mine, she escaped a long time ago, and she was my very first bird friend... I miss her, I love her and would cut my arm for her to come back...:( I'm sure you will have better luck than me, and yes, your birds are very GORGEOUS :D
