Of course I had to post it here so everyone could share. :D

That is the funniest thing ever!

These birds are so cool. They're like a giant budgie.

Kiwi land has some amazing creatures.

That's exactly what I thought, giant budgie. Very similar cere to them as well.

Got to be one of the most gorgeous birds on the planet... all that character in their face. I saw that segment when it was on TV, can't remember the series, but one of Steven Fry's unique travelogues.

That reminded me, they were nominated for the world's ugliest animal. I forgot about it, I just looked it up and they were voted the second ugliest animal Kakapo voted second ugliest animal on planet - National News | TVNZ

I don't think so at all, the same with many others. However looking at comments before, it seemed people only voted kakapo to gain publicity for the kakapo recovery program which is probably why it ranked so high.

They're certainly not ugly, and as parrots they have many unique traits.

oh my gosh LOL! I am laughing so hard hahaha!! they are such funny birds i would love to see one in person! I think they are beautiful!!

I remember seeing that a long time ago in a documentary I was watching, and I remember seeing the clip on a talk show (I think it was Graham Norton lol). Hilarious :)

I am always bothered by 'ugliest' this or 'ugliest' that, and the reverse, 'most beautiful' etc. To me, ugly is a type of behavior rather than a judgment of appearance, whereas I'm more forgiving of 'beautiful' just not the 'most' label considering how arbitrary that judgment is - as they say 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. I think pugs are beautiful :p - and to call a baby parrot 'beautiful' might be considered a stretch lol - BUT there is SOMETHING there, isn't there? They are beautiful :)

I watched a documentary some time last year and it described the captive breeding program that's being done with Kakapo on remote islands in NZ. Their main predators have been cats, dogs and stoats, which catch them easily on the ground and rob their nests as well. The remote islands have been cleared of introduced predators and the Kakapo have responded quite well to the privacy and chance to breed unmolested.

It was fascinating, seeing how the males all meet on a lek (communal display ground) and boom for the females. The boom is the most amazing sound! It carries for miles and draws all the Kakapo to the lek so that display and mate selection can begin. There are so few Kakapo left, the remaining ones have all been given names and the scientists know them and interact with them daily. (The one in the YouTube video is called 'Solomon', which fits him perfectly, I think).

How awesome would it be to study these intelligent and beautiful birds? :)

Hahaha oh wow I need to find this bird and take him home! No wonder they are so rare... Haha XD

I'm not sure that Sirocco has been humping much heads lately!!!! But he has certainly become the ambassador for kakapos! I think his love affections are currently being reserved (err... trained!) for an owl puppet and crocs! ;)

Now hang on, is that bird wild? Out in the forest, and he comes right up like that, and I can't get my weiros to come anywhere near me? :( :(

If he was wild, he's not anymore. Sirocco isn't breeding with other kakapos so he's been trained to be easier to be handled and interacted with and to stop chasing people.

HAHAHA! Birdie was really going to town there. Poor fellow. All that energy spent for naught. LOL
