Parrots
african grey 04/12/2011, ,canaries, finches, golfish, cats, Jack Russell terrier, turtle
so after a few months of training and good diet,
he is exeptionaly tame- but,,,,

since yesterday freddy looks down in the dumps,
he's not eating unless i feed him by hand,
and the worst thing , he's suddenly afraid of being touched,
screaming, no talking, or whistling, just screaming when i try to
touch him as if something scared him,
i keep him outside(in his cage) but i have cats and dogs in the garden
he always gets on well with them so i dont think he's afraid of them.

he keeps plucking at his tail as if to pull out a feather, but it could
be he cannot poop as he didnt do any today (constipation)
also his tail feathers are not spread out, but turned underneath him.
i couldnt find anything on the feathers, also he likes being patted
on his head, but not today, he turns to bite my fingers, (headache?)

today he never made a sound and seams afraid of everything,
so it could be any of the above symptoms,

why did i post all this you ask?
because on the island i live there are no trained vets for parrots,
only vets for cows and goats they know nothing of birds.

suggestions welcome please

oh, he's 10 months old.

Sorry to hear about Freddy, being ill
Must be devastating not to have a vet nearby.
You have mentioned so many different factors, it is extremely difficult to pin point what the illness could be.

I have attached a very informative link, pertaining to different signs of illnesses.

Your other alternative would be to contact a vet on-line

Hopefully other members will give you valuable information as well.

Please do keep up updated, any further questions, just ask.

thanks for your reply antoinette he seems slightly better today,
i think he was scared by something, might have been a cat, not sure,,,

so all those symptoms might have been from fear,
ill keep updating my post in the meantime.

Glad he seems okay, please just keep an eye on him.
Just baffles me......
Still seems strange, so many sick symptons showing........
To me it was not something that should have been from getting a fright.

Hope I am wrong in this case

I can remember only once when Greybeard was frightened. When we entered the drive-thru car wash recently, he shrieked and hit the floor, trying to hide. As soon as we were out, he climbed back on his perch as if nothing had happened. We won't do that again.

thanks for the replys members,
ok now he's over the fright incident and now sits on my hand
and saying a few words and being cheerfull, but,,

since yesterday he plucked all his tail feathers out
and now looks like a right twit, excuse the expression,
i read somwhere that he needs oil, so should i sprinkle
some pure olive oil on his food ?
or are all these problems mean he's going through some kind phase,
since he's still very young?

thanks again to all you wonderful members.

Birds have an "oil preen gland" that naturally produces oil to water proof and clean the feathers when the birds preen. I would not imagine he needs additional oil supliment unless something is wrong nutritionally. If Greybeard is caged outside and a predator comes close Greybeard would feel trapped. I'd recommend having the cage placed inside except the times that he can be supervised outside. If the predator was not one of the cats, it now know where to find Greybeard and will likely return for another try. BTW, Greybeard is beautiful and I love the name. Good luck!

How often does he shower? Maybe increased showers would help if he has dry skin? I've also tried a mix of aloe juice and water in a spray bottle on my sennie, and that helped with irritating pin feathers and dry skin.

not much showering for him now because its coler weather but ill try with warm water,

it looks like he's pulling out pin feathers so that could be the cause,
or he's not getting too much attention as im working long hours.

I'd reccomend seperating him from the cat, also how far is your nearest vet or ask a aver online
