1 B&G Macaw - Frankie
It was a beautiful evening yesterday, and Frankie seemed a little more restless than normal, so I thought it would be fun to take her outside for a little walk around the yard. After she finished saying Hi to all the trees and shrubs (it's hysterical to see her do that...I'll have to try to record her), I sat down on the front porch step with her just to enjoy the nice weather. One of my neighbors from across the street happened to be outside at the same time, and she saw us sitting. "What a beautiful bird!" She walked over and wanted to see Frankie. I walked over to the driveway and she pet Frankie a few times. Then, my other neighbor's home healthcare nurse walked over too, and was talking to Frankie. She asked me if I would bring Frankie over to see my elderly neighbors. So, I walked over, and took Frankie in their house. My neighbors are in their 90s, and Helen has Alzheimer's and tends to be pretty withdrawn most of the time. Bill is in better shape but just doesn't get around too well. Bill was on his recliner and Helen was on the couch when I stepped in, and they were both fascinated by Frankie. Helen perked up and started talking to her and seemed very excited. Bill said how pretty she was and started asking questions about what kind of bird she was and that sort of thing. It was such a great moment! Frankie always seems to like it when she's the center of attention of course, so she was just soaking it all up. After we went back inside, she went straight back to her window and was looking for the neighbors again.

Awww! How sweet! How nice of you to share your girl:)

What a wonderful, heartwarming adventure for Frankie. :) I am sure your neighbors will talk about this for a long, LONG time. Maybe you could do regular visits, especially if Helen perks up. :)

It's always better when Frankie meets the neighbors rather than the neighbors meet Frankie because usually means it's not in a good way:)

Yeah...this almost happened a couple weeks ago. I was working in the yard right outside the window of Frankie's room and had the windows open so I could talk to her from outside. Two neighbors were walking down the street and Frankie screamed at them. Her "excited to seee you" scream kind of sounds like a little kid screaming bloody murder. Needless to say, the two ladies walking down the street screamed too. I explained that it was just my bird. They kind of looked at me like I was a freak and went on. :D

Helen sometimes sits out on her front porch with her nurse, and I try to always say hi when I see her, but they don't really remember who I am anymore. Maybe seeing Frankie will give her something more memorable to see! :)

I'm hoping to keep expanding the area where I take Frankie. She's familiar with the front yard, but when I take her towards the back yard she gets a little nervous. She seems to like the car though, so I thought some short drives around the neighborhood would be fun. Maybe take her to the park too. I haven't gotten brave enough to take her to Petsmart yet...but that's on my list. I thought it would be fun to have her pick out a couple of toys on her own.
