I had the great oportunity to be a African grey owner for about 12 days. Here is how it happened. I am a maintenance sup. for a swimming pool company. last about a week and a half ago i was using the restroom at one of these pools and an a young grey flew into the middle of the room when i opened the door. I knew these beautiful birds were quite spendie and procceded to have the bird come to me so i could find its owner. the bird was very freindly and did not hesitate for some help. I went door to door to see if i could find the owner with no evail. I notified all vets in the area and even called the sherrifs office. No one had reported the bird missing so i took her home and cared for her. I let her fly around my house the entire time she was here. Today i finally got a call from the owner and had to take her back (not that i wanted to) i got quite attached,to telll you the truth it broke my heart, i have always wanted just never had 1000 dollars to get one, kids in collage prevent that, any way i was wondering if there was anyone who new were i could get a nice medium to large bird for not so much upfront. My my wife and kids think i was much nicer when i had the bird. and to be honest even with the noise she made i enjoyed her company very much.

Good for you for taking in the bird, it must have been very difficult to give her up, but you did the right thing~ there are lots of rescues out there and some of the birds they have are very nice, where are you located?

That's wonderful what you did!!! Have you looked into something smaller or try to adopt one?

I am in Jacksonville fl. I would love to adopt one, size doesnt matter, though i would like to have a medium to large bird. i even went as far as to buy a cage on craigs list for cheap. the gentleman who lost her wasnt even really looking for her. his neighbor had to tell him i had her from one of my notices.

Maybe you can contact the owner and let him know if he ever needs to rehome her...

Watch craigslist, I've heard lots of birds get listed there for not much money. Research a lot, too. Get an idea of what sort of parrot you'd like and kind of focus on that species. But remember, parrots are very much individuals and personalities vary just like with people. I'm very partial to Greys but everyone has their favorite.

Good luck!

You are a rare person that understood the bird and human bond. Things happen for a reason. You are meant to have a bird. If you want to adopt do watch Craigs list but be very weary of people not being honest. Do not give anyone your money before you have a bird. Also you can check Petfinder.com for adoptions. You live in a state where bird breeders are a plenty. Jean Patterson is one of the grey breeders but you said you do not have the $$ for a grey. Some agencies charge up to $500 for an adoption, depending on the species. good luck and please keep us informed.

You know, maybe he would consider selling her to you, if he didn't seem that into getting her back? Just a thought. :)

Otherwise, like everyone else said, petfinder and craigslist.
You have to be careful with CL, but there are lots of gems to be found there. :) (That's where I found mine)

You sound like a wonderful person, and better than most for the efforts you made to get her back to her owner. Best of luck in your search!
