Ducky just started molting, he lost a primary wing feather on one wing, but ever since he lost that feather, the feather next to it is looking out of place. It is definetly not broken, and he won't drop the feather either. I keep expecting it to go back into place every time he flies, but it stays crooked. I notice he drops feathers while flying sometimes. What is wrong with this feather?
*sorry the pic is upside down*

Primary and Secondary Wind Feathers and Tail Feathers depend heavily on the neighboring Feather to provide support and positioning. When an Outer Primary Feather is loss the forces on the neighboring feather(s) is increased and 'can' cause that feather to twist. It is fairly common for two flight feathers from each Wing to be molted at about the same time and the second feather is loss shortly after the first. When this occurs side by side, as above, the remaining feather will twist. Over the next week or so, this second feather on that Wing will come out.

Loosing Wing Feathers during flight is very common. The natural forces involved during flight common shift (twist) the feather to be molted and the forces of flapping the Wing results in the feather becoming fully released.

So, all is good!

If you save the Primary and Secondary Flight Feathers you will quickly see that each feather is different based on its physical location! With very little practice, you should be able to pick a Flight Feather from the floor and be able to know what side and location that feather came from!

Try it!
