Hi there, I am interested in welcoming a new feather friend into my home, I find im attracted to the Ringneck not only by their looks but I love how they sound, I am trying to learn about them before I own one and have accidently (on purpose) stumbled onto an ad on CL for one I have emailed the owner and await a reply. but id like to know what types of things I should verify when buying a "used" bird. also the ower refers to him as a male but also states he will not be 1 until march... assuming it has not been sexed can you tell by sight ?? can I submit a photo?? Thankyou in advance...

Indian ring necks are great< mine is called kiwi im his 3rd home and he is such a joy, but im assuming this is because he was handled and cared for properly. They are fun because they aren't usually the type of bird that bonds to just one person so they will go on a friends shoulder or other family member without being agressive. I agree the sounds they make are so much fun to hear! Ive heard you can sometimes sex a IRN by their beak the males is usually a deeper red than the females, but you might consider a DNA test to be sure especially if you had your heart set on a male. You should also read up on the bluffing stages of IRN, this is apparently what freaks a lot of new bird owners out! Also they need everyday contact to remain tame, if you dont have time to this you might want to consider another type of parrot! Good luck , btw looks like a female to me :( ,but hard to tell in pics sometimes do you know how old it is??

The person your getting it from might have a hatch certificate and papers proving the sex, you should make sure to get those if he has, if not id want something to prove the sex...

It doesnt matter, someone else got it before me .. : (

I guess I waited too long .

wannabe,

Don't give up just yet, there is a lot of birds out there looking for a good home.

You might have missed out on this bird but think of it this way: now you have a little more time to prepare for your new friend. Some of my best companion animals over the years (feathered and furred) somehow found me without me looking for them (and from the most unlikely of places) so who knows: maybe you just have to wait a little longer for something that's going to be worth the wait.

You say you love how they sound... I am wondering if you are refering to the talking and/or the chirping, and if you have heard them scream/ yell? be loud and obnoxious? I have two, and they can be VERY loud at times... the one has always been loud, so it's not just because we have two now. Not trying to discourage you, just want to make sure you know what the noise potential is!
