Well after a LOT of confusion and looking around i finally have a new bird on the way! A Senegal! This little guy is the first i had ever heard of having Senegals in NZ so they are pretty rare over here and i had never considered one before because i didnt know we had them! But i had read such great things about them on here so i jumped at the chance =D He is around 10months old.
I should get him towards the end of the month! Im so excited, here is a video and pic of him that his breeder sent me =D

Also he hasnt got a proper name yet so ideas are welcome =D I was thinking maybe Deuce? But im not sure yet.

Congrats:D I know you've been looking for the right bird for some time, so I'm happy to hear you finally found him. I don't know much about senegals, but he's really pretty! Any idea when he will come home?

Hmm the video isnt working... Oh well. I have to arrange transport but i think it will be around the 31st. I am going shopping to get toys and supplies this weekend =D

Congratulations Sophia on your "rare species" Senegal from NZ :D

I think you'll really enjoy a Poi!! They're the best IMO :)

Is he really 10 months old or can they be guessing? His eyes are already yellow... Some at a year are not yellow yet. Maybe he just matured early?

They said they think he is around 10-12months but didnt give me anything exact?

Congratulations! You have been searching for so long, and I am thrilled that that beautiful sennie will be home with you soon:)

I am so happy for you!! My boss has a sennie and he is super cute and lovey. I'm sure you will be very happy with your new baby :)

CONGRATULATIONS, SOPHIA! I know this has been a long time coming, and I also know how much this means to you! So I couldn't be more happy to see it all coming to fruition! You more than deserve this!

Oh, and the video works fine, btw. He's beautiful! And such a cuddle bug!

As for names, seeing as how he's sporting the green, black and yellow colors of my family heritage, (go Jamaica!) I say you name him Marley! (As in Bob Marley!) Or Ackee! (The Jamaican national dish!) And, just in case he hasn't actually been DNA'd yet, either name works equally well for a female!

In keeping with the Jamaican theme, there's also Kingston. Or Marvin Gaye!

Looking forward to more updates, my friend.

Congrats! So happy to hear this exciting news. Can't wait to hear what name you choose.

Ooh! Or Pepperseed after the Jamaican dance of the same name circa the 90's!!! (I feel bonded to your bird already!)

Or i could just call him Stephen :p Although that could be a bit odd as that was my last bosses name haha. I like Ackee! Might have to do some more research into something a bit Jamaican =D

Hi that is indeed a long way to drive for a bird and a beautiful bird he is, too. While I can't tell you how old the bird in the photograph actually is, I can tell you two things for sure. The first is that it is a male and the second is that he is at least 2 yrs. of age. Their eyes don't start getting that yellow around the pupil until they hit sexual maturity and that doesn't occur until they are at least 2yrs. old.
That being said, Senegals are wonderful birds, I have a female and she is simply amazing. They do have a tendency to be one person birds and the males also lean towards being a bit territorial and both of them think that anything that they can see belongs to them. I will stop talking now as to leave you some wonderful things to find out on your own.

Haha! My name would indeed qualify as something Jamaican! Lol! You're a trip! And as for that being your last boss' name as well, I'd think that would be most apropos. You're just trading one Boss Stephen for another!

So, if you do choose Ackee, does that grant me godfather status? ;)

So i have been doing a little googling and see that people have had experience with Sennies as young as 6 or 7 months eyes changing to yellow while some have birds whos eyes never change.

I think no matter what name i choose you can be granted godfather status =D

I was just doing a little Googling myself about Senegal eye color. It really seems to vary, as I haven't come across a consistent answer.

As was mentioned by BEwolf that they don't change until sexually mature, I thought that made sense. I've also read several accounts of people who claim to know how old their bird is and that they changed much sooner than that. One website even says they can start at 6 months. 'thekarens' has year old siblings who still have the gray eyes. So, who knows. Maybe individual genetics vary greatly like the rate at which humans mature.

So could be 10 months or so like they said. Even if it's not accurate, I'm sure it's a young bird. It looks like it. If it is from a breeder, they SHOULD have the hatch date.

It's great news anyways! :) How soon do you think he'll be with you?

Shoot, there's a person on my sennie FB page with a 20 year old sennie with grey eyes and there's someone on there that has a 32 year old sennie that they've had since childhood, so no matter the age I'm sure you'll have many happy years together.
