I feed mine organic eggs shell and all cooked in coconut oil. I do however always wash the outside of the egg shell before I crack and cook it. I give it to mine 2 or 3 times a month they really don't eat much, 4 large eggs with the shell cooked will feed my whole flock.
Last August, my sun conure got extremely sick. Vomiting, lethargy, I would have lost him had I not taken him to the vet right away (I was lucky this happened on a Saturday). I am not sure as to what caused it but narrowed it down to 3 things:
1. I had a very bad flu (sneezing, coughing, runny nose, phlegm) and Boomer was always on me. Birds can't get sick from human virus but they can get sick from the bacteria that becomes abundant on us while sick.
2. He licked a yucky part of the shower door track. Don't judge haha, I keep his cage and immediate surroundings immaculate. Life caught up to me at the time.
3. The night before, I fed him boiled egg where the yellow part was not crumbly dry but gelatinous. I also bought the egg shamefully from a 99c store because it was the only close store that was open late at the time.
I have a strong feeling it was the egg. I was so traumatized by this that I have not given him any egg since. I know I should, and in time I will, but for now I'm giving him his calcium and animal proteins from other sources. I am sure it is safe though. Just make sure to buy the egg from a reputable source and to boil it so it is 100% cooked.
I use hard boiled egg to make eggfood for all of my birds and never got a problem with that. Crush the whole thing with a fork and mix in fine chopped veggies. I serve those twice a week and the birds love it.
What happened to Boom Boom's sun conure may have something to do with the soft boiled egg, but we'll never know. But hey, you'll get ovet it soon. Egg is a good source of protein, and as I read somewhere, an egg is what a bird needs to grow up.
If you want to give your birds eggshell, don't forget to put those in the microwave for around 5 mins before give them to the birds.
I usually give Bixby, my eclectus, a VERY WELL hard-boiled egg, with the shell, an average of around twice a month. I know others feed eggs more frequently, but I worry about the possibility of high cholesterol. (Maybe I'm just paranoid.) The shells are a good source of calcium though, so I'll often save some shell and use it mixed in with his fruits and veggies.
I'd never heard of microwaving the shells, however. Is this even if you do a hard-boiled egg? Or only if you are doing scrambled and the shell would not have been sterilized through the boiling?
