i need help FAST

our heat is out due to the snow and i have a amazon parrot and im needing to know what to do to keep her warm for the next few days

the temp is 44 degree's in our house HELP please please HELP

i also have NO WHERE to take her to i currently have her cage covered with blankets (except the bottom for venting purpose's) and ive gave her luke warm water

I haven't read the links, so this may be in one of those, but the way I kept chicks warm when I raised love birds was a cardboard box with a hole cut in it, and a low-wattage (15 watt, usually) bulb in there. Not a compact fluorescent, a regular light bulb. It'll put out enough heat to keep the bird warm. Make sure the bulb is up high enough that the parrot won't touch it and burn himself.

But it may be too warm - you have to watch it carefully, make absolutely sure there's always plenty of water. If you have a remote thermometer (like you use for baking) put the probe in the box and keep the display where you can see it. If it gets too warm with the box completely closed, open the top, and just cover it with a towel.

If you don't have a light bulb, cover a heating pad with towels and put that in the bottom of the box. Your parrot may object to being put in a box - tough it out. It's more important that he stay warm. Leaving him in an open cage, even with a light bulb or a heating pad, will expose him to drafts and cold air.

okay right after i posted i went home and moved her to a camper that has very warm heat i did notice however that her breathing has a VERY VERY LOW squeek to it. she is moving/talking/on perch just fine and is loving on me. but im so worried about the weezy sound. ive called every vet around and they cant see me due to the snow and everyone is snowed in.

any advise from here?

Your heat is out, but is all your electricity out? Can you heat water, can you heat your stove.

Oil filled space heaters are great if you have electricity. If you can use the stove you can heat up heating pads, you can buy these, or make your own out of dry beans and/or rice. Or at very least use hot water bottles reheating the water periodically.

no ALL ELECTRIC is O U T.. we have nothing. i have her at my husbands work last night and left her here but tonight she has to be moved again she is also VERY stressed out.. she is pacing back and forth on top of the little cage i have her in she isnt eating very well she is no longer wheezing though so thats a plus but she just does NOT like all the people that are around her she hasnt had any rest at all last night and she dont even want me to pet her today AND THATS SO UNLIKE HER usually she;s talking my ear off but not now.
i dont know what to do tonight i double checked the temp in my house and its 41 degrees i dont know what to do

where are you located? Maybe someone on the board lives near and can take him in.

Hi Brandi
Been reading thru your post....
Perhaps this might help !!!
Fill a hot water bottle, even if no electricity, place it in your bed, and cover it with blankets. Another idea, place the hot water bottle on your chest, covering it up. Your body heat may help warm it.
Praying things are improving.
You are in our prayers.
God bless and be safe
Take care

this is my idea i dont know how much this will help but got this from camping in the snow making a cave in the ground to stay warm. get two things of cardboard and cut them into ltwo boxes one alittle smaller than the other and make a hole that is alittle bigger than him. Somthing hanging over the box will keep it warmer than nothing but if he dosent like the dark or wont go in than that will be ok. get somthing like a old pillow or somthing wool insulates better than cotton but anything will work at this point. intice him in there with his favorite thing in the world. another thing i learned when camping in the snow is you get the most body heat by moving but i dont know how much this will help. oh and also it wont be much warmer in the box at first but i think it should be warm enough for him to survive. i dont know how much this will help but i know when i was camping out in the snow it kept me warm. also if possible make the entrance as low as possible. also i dont know how much this will help but move him to a small room as it will be easyer for him to be warmer and have everyone be in the room, the more bodies the more warmth. if there are windows cover them with thick blankets. hope this helps and will be praying for your fid. also forgot to say make the box just alittle bit bigger than your bird and try and keep him/her in the box as much as possible.

P.S. just read the rest of your post im glad your fid got to a warm place and am sorry about all the info i gave i just thought he was still in the cold so didnt read the rest. he probibly is just stressed from bieng moved multiple times but i dont know much about parrots. once again sorry to post this as it isnt pertanant anymore but i hope that this will help with your bird next time this happens but was thinking its kind of hard to get an animal to stay in one spot evin if it means his life so dont know how much this will help but im sure that this can be modified like make a birdy vest or somthing.

Something like this could happen to any one of us. It behooves us to have emergency plans. Most everything we use is powered by electric. Even use of a hot water bottle requires hot water. I would have to check into a nearby hotel or take birdie to vet for safe keeping. Of course both options require money. The only other thing I can think if is an emergency power generator for those who do not live in a condo or apartment.

If we know the area where one is living perhaps one of us could pich in and help.

She has been on my mind also. I sure hope everything is okay. Luckily here in Florida, we don't have to deal with blizzard situations, but we do have the hurricanes and tropical storms that could wipe out our power at any time, then we have to deal with the heat. I, as well as Justwingingit, have generators just for that purpose. But we have been lucky. We've had them for about 3 years and have never had to use them. They will come in handy one season, our luck of no storms is bound to run out!! I will be checking back often to see how she is fairing. :green1:

THANKS everyone, she is FINE our power is back on.. after coming home to find her wheezing i moved her to where my hubby works at until our power was on.. of course i sat with her there to keep warm myself.. she was better within a few hours.

i brought her home last night and she was shivering still today (even with it warm) and had a little sneezy i put a heating pad on top of her cage and she sat under it today. my vet told me to give her a little bit of sugar water and that HELPED WONDERS the sneezing is now gone she is warm and is a happy camper again..

HOWEVER, my husband works at a jail and with all the traffic and everyone talking to her she now refers to herself as "THE JAIL BIRD" hahaha

THANKS EVERYONE, i know im new here and i didnt introduce myself but im heading there right now to let everyone know about me and my baby i just didnt have time for that before

I'm glad you've got power now and all of you are getting nice and toasty and are well. You did great in a rough situation. I would have been in a panic myself had I been in your shoes. Be well!:green1:

what was so scary for me is we have 7 kids and we just moved here and DONT KNOW ANYONE.. we drove the kids to family approx 45 min away from us but no one could keep the parrot.. we had no choice but to move her to where we did.. its scary in a town where you dont know anyone yet.

THANKS EVERYONE, i know im new here and i didnt introduce myself but im heading there right now to let everyone know about me and my baby i just didnt have time for that before

Under the circumstances, I think it was completely understandable. Very glad to hear the jail bird has been sprung, and is warm and safe.
