Egg Laying in Conures

Hi there I have a female green cheek and a male pineapple conure. recently she just laid her first clutch and all 5 eggs have hatched. I was just wondering for future if I no longer want to breed them I obviously will have to keep them in separate cages however, if I remove the male from the cage will she still continue to lay eggs? Ive had my female for 4 years and she never laid any eggs until I introduced the male conure to her cage. Im just wondering if I keep them separate will she go back to not laying eggs again or will she continue to lay and if so how I can stop egg laying if I no longer want to breed??

It can be hard to give a definite answer, as there may be multiple factors which are resulting in her laying eggs. One would be to house them seperately, remove the nestbox (or other place they laid eggs - if possible), and change the amount of daylight hours she gets (longer days are equivelent to those in breeding season). Hope this helps a little
If this doesn't work, often changing around the cage can help, otherwise you could consult you're avian vet for other ideas.

To help and try stop the egg laying you're going to have to reduce the amount of light to under 12 hours a day.

Also remove anything that could be used as a nesting box. Sleep huts and such need to be removed.

"Pineapple" is a color of Green Cheek. Your male is still a Green Cheek. "Pineapple" is a combination of the cinnamon mutation and the opaline or "yellow-sided" mutation. Any babies of these colors will be female from the pairing you describe.

I'm attaching an article on hormone control. I personally have had 100% success in housing pairs together without breeding when wanted. I find it cruel to separate a bonded pair if there is any other solution.
