Dumping food and water dish..?

Hi All,
anyone have any idea why my Amazon all of a sudden taken to dumping his water and food dish constantly? He's never done this before and has all of a sudden taken to it. He will carry each in his beak then dump them? Any insight behind this behavior would be helpful!!! Thanks

They do it for FUN. No kidding. They get a kick out of successfully dismantling things.

I had to resort to some drastic measures with my macaws because they not only removed their food dishes, they removed entire feeder doors from the cages.

I'd suggest getting "no tip" bowls and see if that will do the trick.

Yep, Fun is the name of that game.

I use the nick name my little trouble maker for my amazon.
I agree with Wendy, get no tip bowls or heavier ceramic bowls that he cant do that with, but be warned he will find something else LOL, but that is part of the joy of an amazon!!

My GCC tries to do that but she's too tiny to lift the dishes, luckily. They're way too smart for their own good, lol.

Ralph did exactly the same thing a couple years ago. He quit dumping his water dish after drenching himself one day; he didn't like that at all. :11: But he kept upsetting the food dish, ignoring my lectures about the high cost of parrot food and having better things to do than cleaning up spilled pellets. So I switched from the stainless steel food dish that just rests in a retainer ring to a Quik-Lok type bowl that clamps into place. Now Ralph likes to sit on the edge of the bowl, but gave up on trying to dump it out.

I would get a water bottle and give only enough food they would eat at a sitting. I am home during the day so I give a little here and there so they never go hungry. My macaw dumped his food too so I wised up and gave less. Now he doesn't do it anymore. lol.

Is your friend feeding her amazon too much food? Birds should only have enough food to last them for one day in their dishes, if that.

If they are fed two or three meals a day (rather than a dish of food for the entire day), then they should only be allowed what they can eat in one meal, and that's it until the next meal.
