Dogs are NOT people

Actually, I do dog rescue and have used and recommended dog carriages and carriers for certain situations. There are breeds that cannot be walked for very long because of their small size (all of the teacups), have defective thermoregulatory systems (bulldogs) or breathing impairment (all the breeds with short muzzles).

I think you're missing the point of the thread, it's about Paris Hilton wannabes treating thier dog like an accessory or child.

No, I did not miss the point. I was just trying to point out that blanket statements are dangerous because there are, actually, many good reasons why a dog would be in a carrier or a carriage and not only to show-off or emulate Paris Hilton.

Personally, I don't think that people are stupid.

In the wise words of Tommy Lee Jones:

Edwards: Why the big secret? People are smart. They can handle it.
Kay: A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.

to lighten the mood :p

Yes you did, the thread topic is dogs are NOT people. It is a blanket statement that is a fact. Another blanket statement is some members on this forum like to argue & disagree with every comment made!!

Exactly...English Bulldogs would die out in a generation if it weren't for vets. Their hips are too narrow to give birth - every litter has to be delivered by Caesarian.

Wow! Backyard breeders breed their dogs all the time without knowing what they're doing, I wonder how many fatalities there are a year from an amateur trying to breed English bulldogs? I wonder how they would die, also? Maybe from exhaustion or dehydration at trying to push on the puppies for hours or days, or maybe from sepsis when the puppies die inside the mother and rot?

In my head, this is right up there with people who insist that their dogs should never be in the house. Their argument - they're animals, they know how to take care of themselves. I try to explain to them, that dogs are domesticated not just tame wild animals. Over the past couple millenia we've bred a lot of their survival instincts/tools out of them. Besides, we live in Texas! It's basically a desert. Every day this week is supposed to be over 100F. How would you like to spend the day outside in a fur coat. Doofus!

Ugh, I hate visiting people's houses who have their dogs inside all the time. They always stink! No matter how tidy the house is, it always stinks the same. When I was a kid we had two Briards, they had really thick, long coats made for hearding animals in thick snow. They were perfectly fine outside. In late spring, they got shorn, and by late autumn their coat had completely grown back again. In summer, on the one or two hottest days, they might spend the noon hours in the laundry where it was quite cool. And it would get to between 38 and 41*C (I think that's like 110*F)on the hottest days. And they were fine!!! When they started to get old my parents started to let them be inside all the time which is fair enough I guess. The house of course started to stink and I was embarrassed bringing my boyfriend to meet them for the first time cause of the way the house stunk. And this is even with wood floors and leather couches. It would be WAY worse with carpet and fabric couches!!! I believe so strongly that dogs are outside animals. Unless of course you have no sense of smell and you never invite anybody over to your house.

The only excuse for having a dog inside I think is if it is really really old, or it is a shorthair breed and you have extreme winters, or you have extreme summers and you don't have adequate shelter for them in your backyard.

As for those strollers, mightn't they be useful for taking non-harness-trained parrots for walks? Carrying a carry-cage for a long time would make your arms get tired quickly and it would be hard to do things while you are on your walk. Or even for harness-trained parrots to have a "home-away-from-home" where they can relax and rest when going for a long outing, and also for a safe place to put them if you need to use both arms for a while.

If we biked more we would get one of the dog bike pull behind things for my lab. He has elbow dysplasia and can't run (especially on hard surfaces) for long distances.

The slings are also very useful for socializing young puppies who have not been fully vaccinated yet and should not be put on the ground.

I agree that treating dogs like furry humans is a bad idea, but that has more to do with the human's attitude than it does things like "dog purses" and dog clothes. As long as the dog is happy, healthy, and well cared for I could care less if someone puts it in a t-shirt every day.

Well said, sillysally! That's my position too....

Personally, I didn't dress our two dogs. My nieces dog has more outfits than I do...but she's very loved, and happy.
Everyone's different!

I couldn't disagree with you more. Dogs deserve to be part of the family. Maybe if your house stinks, you need to bathe your dogs more? Clean a little more? Your house stinking is no reason to exile a dog to the outdoors for the majority of their lives. They are very social animals, and I personally find few pleasures greater than sharing my life with a dog as part of my family. Notice I say "part of my family", but that does NOT mean they are treated like a person. It is known that some dogs develop behavioral issues from being kept outdoors all the time, and it's also just not safe. They could escape, people could poison them, you just don't know. Yeah.. my dogs will always be inside dogs. Stinky? house or not (although I have been over MANY inside dog owner's houses that have smelled delightful).

I do like your carriage idea for parrots though. Never though of that! :)

If only people could understand the sane balance of things. You can't let a dog free in the woods and expect it to live off deer meat like wolves, not should you put it in a stroller and make it wear doggie diapers like a child. Shame shame shame on these people!!

Ok I think Dog's are great pets. But even as far as being members of the family is fine. But when you start allowing Dogs more rights then humans, then you've gone too far. I'm being forced to move sooner than expected and have been searching for places high and low. Two if the places I was looking at told me, that dogs are ok, have as many as you like, but you'll have to get rid of one of your kids. They have a two kid limit. OMG did someone hit you with the stupid stick? Dogs are not people and I'd rather have my children than a dog any day. These type of people go way too far in their love of dogs. So our dog is great, but I'm not getting rid of one of my kids to keep her and live somewhere like that. They are crazy. It's a 3 bedroom trailer, with great prices in a nice park. And no more than 2 kids allowed. LMAO kiss my butt you jerks. Sorry ranted slightly.

Just going way too far with the dogs having more rights then humans thing... They are an animal, yes they deserve love and respect, but not at the expense of any human.

You should go and ask the local court house if that is legal I know that here in washington it is illegal for ANY place to tell you how many kids you are allowed to have

The bad part is here in WV itr is legal. The man owns the land he can decide who lives there. I was just outraged at how they acted.

That doesn't really have anything to do with dogs having more rights then people though, that's more that he landlord has the right to have who he wants living on his land. I know in my state you can only have a certain number of kids in a certain sized apartment in most places.
