National Parrot Sanctuary | The Parrot Zoo

The National Parrot Sanctuary is now probably the largest Parrot Sanctuary in the World with over 1500 birds residing at the centre it is the only one in the United Kingdom to offer long term sanctuary for all its residents.

Unlike any other parrot rescue in the United Kingdom you can rest assured that no pet parrots are ever rehomed

Nestled within the Parrot Zoo the most tropical part of Lincolnshire the Sanctuary offers the perfect place for parrots and parakeets to live out the remainder of their lives, whether it’s for 1 year or 20 years.

Our team of animal carers are dedicated to offering the many birds everything they need for a fulfilling quality life, be it the top in nutrition to ‘one to one’ care and enrichment. Known throughout the world for the amazing work they carry out and lead by Steve Nichols who has studied this amazing creature for nearly 30 years the sanctuary team are here to help any parrot in any situation that arises.

We encourage all the birds to live naturally within a colony as this is their main cause of behavioural problems. Unlike any other rescue or sanctuary in the United Kingdom The National Parrot Sanctuary can offer them long term care where they can live outside in the fresh air, taking in the sun and rain making their own daily choices as to when the eat, sleep, play or scream, and believe me they do all of them at some point everyday

It is a common fact now that parrots thrive when offered the opportunity to live with other parrots of their own species and with over 100 species of bird already living at the Sanctuary this is something that only we have the facilities to offer.

Working with the top veterinary surgeons and Universities in the country we have created a haven for these special creatures and strive to make sure all birds that reside at the centre are catered for in housing, enrichment and nutrition, some birds just want to live on their own, some in groups of 10 or more, others just want to scream for England 10 hours a day but no matter what they want, we can offer it.

Most parrots though just want to live life as a parrot, as opposed to sitting in a cage in a house for the next 10 years

And wouldn’t you?

I could be wrong, but I think someone posted about this a couple of weeks ago. Many of the birds were sick or dying, living in filthy conditions with mice and rats, and had no real shelter from cold temps. It was in the UK and I'm pretty sure it was called the Parrot Zoo.

Could you help me find the link/post about it please?

I don't think it's true at all. Derren Brown is the patron for the charity and he cares very much about bird welfare. + I've seen pictures of the place (I know they can be edited) and since they work with different universities with Vet students... just doesn't seem very likely. Especially with it being the biggest parrot sanctuary and with people able to rehome their bird there... just doesn't make sense. So would be nice to see what you mentioned so I can see they're reasons/if it is that sanctuary :)

Hmm, those images look really disturbing. I guess I won't advertise the fundraising site until I've investigated further. Hm, and I was really considering rehoming my budgie's with them, nice big aviary, vet care.

I mean I've been reading the blog, they're building much bigger aviaries and enclosures and stuff. But then it's a case of media vs their website, obviously one is going to oppose the other. Would be nice if I could afford to get there and check it out myself. >: (

Took down the link and fundraising thing. Gonna get in contact with a few people and see what they say. hmph. How irritating. I finally decide to help what I though would be a 'good cause' and boom, they suck and now I want to work against them. hey ho. >: (

I know, but it happens. I'm sure there are other parrot rescues in the UK that deserve your time, attention and money.

Let us know as well what you find out.

I joined the facebook group that lizardsmells linked on the other thread. Reading through more information on there too. Apparently people from there have been getting in touch with Derren but their posts keep getting deleted.

I'll look into other rescues. I thought this place would be wonderful, teaching others about the different types of birds, interacting with them, a good sanctuary for the birds themselves.

So very disappointed. Merlin has also been screaming his head off whilst preening me - almost like he knows he isn't happy with whats going on! >: (

They definitely pick up on how you are feeling. Sometimes I'm still crying over my BCC who passed away 3 months ago, and my other animals don't know why I'm upset, and they get upset, too.
