Disaster at the "Vet"....

When we took Kiwi to the store to be clipped, we always brought our own towel and clippers. They weren't offended at all, they said a lot of people did it. Then again, they sell only parrot-supplies, and the guy who does the grooming there owns several large parrots himself, so he understood peoples concerns. It wasn't his fault at all that Kiwi was petrified of him, he was very experienced and good at what he did. On the subject of beaks, we never have to clip Kiwis. I just take a large file to it to smooth out any little rough patches (what the bird store guy did). Parrots beaks do not need to be trimmed if they are getting enough chewing and climbing activities, as well as a peopler diet. They shouldn't ever get that overgrown to begin with. Just a simple filing to make them smooth is all they should need.

I agree that most birds' beaks don't ever need to be trimmed. Some do however, especially if they are not good chewers or do not hone their beak often, and if they do not have anything proper to chew and rub on.

LaFitte likes to place his beak against the drum wheel of my dremel tool! I occasionally dremel nails that are a bit sharp but don't need clipping. If I hold the dremel tool near him he will touch the tip of his beak to it. I think he likes the vibration. He rarely needs beak work but if he did it would be simple to take a bit off his!
