Ok we have a thread here for the congo or timneh .... would someone please tell me the difference of the two.... which has better traits than the other and what is the preferred or more common. Do they both have the ability to talk... is one more social than the other?? Sorry just trying to figure both out... the only thing i know for sure ( and maybe i am wrong in this too ) is one is smaller than the other. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone:).

Congos are larger and have a red tail.

Timmys are smaller and have a dark tail.

They are both flock birds. They both get handled on their own terms. They are both inclined to use their beaks if you push the envelope too much too fast. Neither bird generally likes being taken out of their familiar comfort zone. Out and about training improves this... but they are more skittish than say amazons or macaws.

Either species could give stubborn lessons to a mule... (I know you're not as smart as me Mule, but try to keep up. This is how we do it!)

Timmys are quirky birds, but aresupposed to be less inclined to be pluckers, though they are just as neurotic as CAGS, if not more so... their neurotic comes out in unusual repetitive behaviors.

We had a Timmy down at the rescue who used to methodically empty his food bowl every night, and would sleep, upside down with his head in the dish!

They both tend to be excellent talkers, and both tend to be high IQ birds.

Congos were bigger, and fetched a higher price, so there were more of those imported than the Timmys, which makes the timmys a little bit harder to come by.

Thank you Birdman, that was very helpful.... so timmys are harder due to lack of origin of domestication?..... do you know their range in the wild? Do they overlap in territories and compete for food and such... ? How did Timneh become timneh ? Obviously, well to me anyhow, Congo i would assume originate from the Congo area of Africa, do timmy's too?

k

I had A Timneh <Smokey...r.i.p.> for almost 28 yrs, before she passed on last April :31:

Actually,she was my first "parrot"...bought at a pet store,on impulse, <always wanted a grey,having had 'keets since a kid>

I* later found out she was "wild caught".. never really liking hands. She WOULD step-up.if it were her last resort..always then telling me what a "goof girl" she was lol.

She was funny..INTELLIGENT,playfull....talkative...< I can't even try to count how many words/phrases she used/knew.She could be sooo lovable, and SO MEAN!
She loved my brother David...he would lean over her house <it was always on the floor> and she would be on the rooftop..run/waddle over to him,and then GENTLY preen his beard for him ;) and when she was donemshe would let out a loud "WOO!> to make sure he understood she was done with her chore lol.

If she didn't like/want something, she let you know fast. "get your hands away"!! CHOMP!! "I don't WANT this carrot"!! and fling it from her rooftop lol.

On a very RARE occasion, she would permit a head scratch,or beak rub.
Once she was ON your hand/arm,she would make her way up to my shoulder, ever so gently nibble my ear lobe, then puke on my shoulder.

She would walk/waddle down the hallway to the kitchen, banging on the bedroom doors, saying "hello??...hello??? as if to wake someone up who is gonna miss nummys...

I could go on and on..now I'm starting to leak..:31: I miss her so much..
