1 nanday conure Black Jack, 1 Brotogeris parakeet Whiff, 1 ring neck dove Eliza, and 6 society finches (3 are tame). RIP my parent pairs of societies and my little gouldian finches
ok so my dad gave me the ok to choose between a hand raised finch or a budgie, if you look up tame finches (search tame java sparrow in youtube) you will see that you can cuddle them, they will fly to you, sit on your shoulder, sleep on you, and all that great stuff! my local pet store is getting tame finches in june, and another bird store has tame baby budgies (no worries they're weaned ;) ) so my question is, should i go for a tame finch or tame budgie? thank you for any and all replies!
just copy aand paste the text bellow in the search bar to see some tame finches!

I'm going to vote budgie just because I'm a huge fan. My budgies were sweet, wonderful beings that I was very happy to share my life with. Either one will probably make you happy though.

were your budgies very active, or would they be content to just sit with you for a little while? sorry if i overload with questions im just excited :)

I think it depends on the budgie! i've seen budgies that are just off the wall! with energy flying everywhere all the time and i went to the store and bought one and she's real calm i was sitting with her and cuddling her in my hand for about 30 mins! just go more then one day and see which one you fall for:) or which one falls for u:)

They did all sit with us a lot. One of them loved sitting on my dad's or sister's glasses, lol! They also liked to run around, especially when we had dinner, on the table, trying our foods. Then we would all go under the table and hide and they would run to the edge and look at us and yell, "Peek!" They also loved playing card games with us, and flipping all the cards over.

I got the last one when I was 14, around your age, and had him until I was 30.

That is a tough decision. I like both a lot. I would probably vote budgie though. But both have good things about them.

I will have to dig up old photo albums, but our first budgie is on me in a lot of my baby pictures.

I loved them so much I didn't even try a bigger parrot until after that last one died, which is when I got Rowdy. Her 12th hatchday is this weekend actually.

thank you, i think im going to go for a budgie, i already have a pair of gouldian finches, if they breed i can work with the babies :), budgie it is! should i go with the english or american? and also as gross as it is... how often do they poo, can they be potty trained, will it be all over if i let them out for a while? thank you, this is really helping me out :)

They do poo a lot. The smaller the bird, usually the more often the poo. One of mine would say, "Dirty birdie made dirty dirty" every time he went, lol! I would guess they could be potty trained as I am convinced they are as smart as any other bird.

I never had an English, but they are so pretty. Mine all came from pet stores, but if you can get a hand tame one, you should.

You can potty train them, they are very smart! I really like the English ones! But either would be great for you I'm sure. Good luck and have fun searching!

TBH I would rather deal with a whole bunch of itty bitty poos than just one of Merlin's poop bombs. Because she has that Bornavirus her poop is gargantuan. One of hers is equal to about 25 normal Grey poops put together. OMG when that has landed on my clothes it has been awful! I worry one will get on the couch.

Believe it or not Pete has never pooped on me yet. I don't know if he was trained not to, but he only poops in his cage.

lol bombs away! i heard that birds usually don't poop on people they like, this one quaker at the pet store hoped on me and we really hit it off, as soon as i put him down he pooped. i think they hold it for the people they like but sometimes i guess they dont, but it sounds like Pete really likes you :). my finches on the other hand, about every 5 minutes one of them poos, lets just say their cage never stays clean for long lol.

When Merlin finally has to go I don't think she can stop it. Usually there is a huge fart when it comes out, too:) So she actually gets gas stuck behind it. And it actually makes a loud noise when it hits the ground.

lol my cat used to do the same thing! when something spooks my finches they all go flying around panicking and then suddenly stop, then when everyone is quiet you here this plop and i start cracking up!
so how do i know which budgie is right for me, the ones at the pet store get scared but if you sit your hand in the tank, they all start nibbling and investigating in like 30 seconds, but i cant really hold any without scaring them...i guess what im asking is how can i see their true personality without buying them first?

Budgie's poop, OFTEN. But they're so small that it's lovely to clean up (in comparison to my senegal!) I miss the non runny poops and how easy it was to clean up, :(

My baby girl Wonsy was a budgie and she set me on birds for life, she was the sweetest most friendly thing ever. If you get a budgie I wish you all the luck in the world, she was brilliant and I hope you get a budgie who shows you all the positives of that species :)

Yes, if you get one from a pet store you will need to spend the time taming it. I always picked one by color and they were all great. If you can get a hand raised one from a breeder that would be really nice.

I would go with the budgie. My very first bird was a budgie from Petsmart. Even though he wasn't hand fed or hand tamed, I spent some time with him and he calmed down very quickly. He was such a sweet little guy.

I also had a hand fed baby lutino budgie who was one of the most friendly, playful, and hilarious birds I've ever had contact with. Obviously a hand fed budgie is going to be more tame to start off with, but if you are patient enough you should easily be able to tame a non hand tame one.

My last one came from Woolworths. Those of you who are young won't know what that is, but it was a huge drugstore chain that sold a lot more stuff than drug stores generally do. It was kind of like Walmart or Kmart but not quite as big. Bigger than a typical drugstore, but smaller than a Walmart if that makes sense.
